I've noticed similarities before between DooM and Wolf songs... Whether it's deliberate I'm not sure. (In cases besides DooM 2's Map 31/32, of course.Enjay wrote:Now, why did I not know this? Ar Tonelico II is probably my favorite game sound track. I have a soft spot for Jade Empire's music as well. On the flip side, lately I've been finding myself turning off a game's music, and just running my Genitorturers mix playing on the stereo.

Lock screen for my phone. Loosely based on some Jailbreak thing and a certain famous icon from the System 7 days...

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
i can hear some similarities to the melody of the Wolf track and Doom track. the lead melody have similar layouts in both songs, but Wolf's is in a higher key and tone than Doom's. from the Metallica track, i can recgonize the guitar riffs at be beginning to be the lead melody of both Wolf's and Doom's song, but the different keys and tones in the songs are different enough for it to be considered original.Enjay wrote:Just read on TV tropes that:

So far I haven't turned up this factoid anywhere else. The Doom Wiki says it is based on The Call of Ktulu by Metallica and that may well be true (it certainly sounds that way) but I don't see any reference to a connection between Doom E2M2 and Wolf E2M10.The music in Doom 1s E2M2 is a remix of Wolfenstein 3D's E2M10 music.
Wolfenstein E2M10 "Into the Dungeons"

Whaddayamean you need to hear the Doom track too. What's wrong with you?
Doom E2M2 The Demons from Adrian's Pen

And just for completeness, Metallica

[edit] Heh, coincidence. While I was looking for Wolfenstein Youtube vids, Viscra Maelstrom was posting one. [/edit]
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Fuck yeah, I got an A+ at the digital programming project I was talking about.
As for music, I really like how Wolfenstein E2F4 music makes me cry. Seriouly, when I was young and crying, I had the same mental image as listening to Wolfenstein's "Pounding Headache" music. I believe that if I let go my emotions, I would burst into meaningless tears listening to that.

^^^ Same here, but with E1M8 from Doom instead
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Yeah, that too... Must be the melody and instrument triggering something familiar in the brain. Sounds like wailing.
Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Is that so? I might have to listen to those.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. The Total Annihilation soundtrack is one of my personal favourites.terranova wrote:Anything by Jeremy Soule.
Anything
Regarding the similarity between the aforementioned Wolf and Doom tracks, I wouldn't personally call "The Demons From Adrian's Pen" a remix per se, but they are definitely very similar. Of course, both use rising arpeggios from the start (the Doom track outlines the tonic, while the Wolf track is more chromatic), and both are written in the minor key ("The Demons..." is in C minor, while "Dungeon" is in D minor - this also explains why they sound quite similar). At a cursory glance, the only other thing that stands out is that the primary theme is the same for both pieces, starting on the root, rising through the scale (pausing at the third) to the fifth, and then dropping a semitone onto the flat fifth (aka devil's note). Other than that it appears the tracks both go their seperate ways.
So yeah, I wouldn't call "The Demons..." a remix, but it is definitely inspired by "Dungeons", though whether this is deliberate is debateable.
As to other game soundtracks that I like, I thoroughly enjoy listening to Rise of the Triad, Duke Nukem 3D, both of the Myth games, the aforementioned Total Annihilation and Total Annihilation: Kingdoms (perfect for your tavern music when running a tabletop RPG), both of the Thief games, both of the System Shock games and both of the Diablo games, along with most of id's games and derivatives of such (like Heretic). A special mention must be made to Heroes of Might and Magic III, the composer(s?) must have really known their stuff, as the music perfectly complements the atmosphere evoked by each part of the game (such as Inferno music, Necropolis music, desert music etc.), evoking the sound of different parts of human culture (such as the Tower music sounding very similar to 19th century Russian Romantic composers) and maintaining interest with the listener much like concert classical music. I frequently listen to game soundtracks in the car on my journeys, as the beefy sound system within really brings out the best in the music, in my opinion, not to mention that I can listen to it as loud as I like too.

Re: The New What Did You Last Do Thread
Just lost my mouse for my laptop somehow. I guess when you're so mobile with the damn thing you tend to lose parts pretty easily. Good thing I only bought it for a buck but it's got to be around here somewhere.
Until then I've always got a spare ... if a little twitchy.
EDIT: I either gave away the spare or I lost it, too. Fuck.

I misread that because of a spot on my screen. I was about to post "why would you trade a car for a mouse?" XDProject Dark Fox wrote:JGood thing I only bought it for a buck

I don't think I'd ever trade away a Buick. They're pretty damn reliable.

TA has one of my most favorite game intros;
Today I bought a shrinkwrapped box copy of The Curse of Monkey Island, which includes MI 1 and 2 in it too, along with a big Prima guide, for four dollars.
