DEEPEST EVIL - 6 LEVEL UPDATE B4 IDGAMES SUBMISSION

Projects that have specifically been abandoned or considered "dead" get moved here, so people will quit bumping them. If your project has wound up here and it should not be, contact a moderator to have it moved back to the land of the living.

Eriance wrote:Personally, I generally don't care, as I made things FOR people to use them as long as I'm mentioned as the artist or whatever. Although, it would be nice if they waited until I released my stuff officially first. :P
Well that's what I'm saying. I either have to be a tool and say "MY SHIT IS PRECIOUS AND UNTOUCHABLE IF YOU USE IT YOU HAVE A LAWSUIT ON YOUR HANDS MISTER" or "hi everybody i just made all this stuff for no reason you can all have it"

There's no gray area. It's just rude that people welcome themselves to use anything they find and don't make things on their own. And it's not just my own stuff that I am bothered about but other people's stuff. I'm sure there are people who make textures and sprites and stuff and aren't even aware of where their stuff is going. I feel almost blessed that I happened to step in on this thread and find my stuff being used without credit or permission. I'm sure some of my stuff is being used elsewhere by other people unbeknownst to me. I mean, you may as well be driving your neighbors car to the bar or playing street hockey with your dads favorite golf clubs. I have no objection to sharing the stuff I make so that it can be used in someone's project if they request, but I'm offended by people's audacity to take it like they were granted that permission once they open up their internet browser.

This metaphor does not work because it implies that people borrowing your resources are depriving others of them.

In the case of people using Eriance's resources, they give resources more exposure before people play Eriance's finished product, so I can see how the point can sort of apply there, in making the final work less of a surprise. Even borrowing resources from finished works can result in players seeing the borrowed resources before they get around to playing the original, but that's not as damaging.

Yes it does work. You wouldn't have been able to use your neighbors car if he was already driving it, and you wouldn't have been able to use your dads golf clubs if he was already playing golf. Even if your neighbor wasn't intending to drive until the next morning or your dad hasn't played golf in years, why should either one of them be comfortable with other people using something that belongs to them without them asking? They don't own those things with the intention of giving them away. I fail to see how my behavior is at all disrespectful when my stuff is thoughtlessly borrowed with no communication.

What I mean is just because someone else has used your texture does not mean you cannot also use it yourself at the same time.

And furthermore, I think this argument's been going on for a bit too long anyway.

What I don't get here is that the texture in question was part of a free resource. You know, for people to use. What the hell is the issue, then?

If the intention behind the texture wad was to have people make maps that require it and disallow ripping of individual textures, then ask the author to take it out and move on. Why is it not that simple?

Because my post was initially calling the forum's morality into question and everyone comes in to defend their shamelessness. I just think you guys are stubborn and unwilling to reflect on your behavior from a different perspective than your own desires and simply indulge in the availability of resources on the internet. Not those responding to my posts specifically, but the zdoom community as a whole. It sucks.

So, to clarify, did you release this? http://doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=16042

If your problem is lack of proper credit, I've already brought that up. CodenniumRed, I admit, did mess up the credits quite a bit (I had nothing to do with the Chaingun Major, nor the Giga Sphere sprites, for example).

So one guy doesn't credit you and you get to say the whole forum sucks? Awesome deduction.

Yes I did. that official release permits people to use my UAC Ultra textures to make UAC Ultra themed maps by request of Super Jamie.

I know you brought that up. I know how to read. I apologize for leaving you under the impression that I have a hard time understanding your posts. You were very clear. It is however, not my problem. I suggest you reread the first post I made in this thread if you have interest in resolving this dispute.

One guy?? Is this your first forum post ever? You seem very sure that this is the only guy who has ever ripped a resource for use in his own project ever. You have a lot to learn, buddy.

40oz, get out of this thread. Take it elsewhere if you wish to continue or there will be consequences.

At this point, he's just pursuing a personal vendetta. Again. The actual issue (the mis-credit) was just used as a springboard to launch into it.

Hopefully this thread can resume normal discussion about the project itself, now that the problem has (theoretically) been resolved.
