A bex patch is just an extended Dehacked patch. And in these ZDooM editing, they're basically the same.

But, I have an interest in changing the cheat codes for ligitimate reasons. With my mod, if people start using cheats, it can actually mess up the game play because I can't hard-code the changes I need. If I change the cheat codes, less people will be able to figure them out and it will solve problems.

But people could just bring down the console and type god, give all, noclip, whatever anyway, so what's the point?

I get what Mr. Stranger is saying tho. Now that he mentions it, I see how much cheating could completely fubar a lot of his (very cool) mod.

Interesting...

If there's a way to prevent cheats people will find away around it, or make a different zdoom.exe without the modifications.

Hence why I caught myself moments before suggesting a "nocheat" switch. Enjay summed it up best with the console comment. People will cheat regardless.

But the G man raises an intersting point; something I hadn't thought about before.

If people cheat and break the game - that's their problem. You made the game correctly. If they decide to screw it they only have themselves to blame. Why bother trying to stop them?

Oh, and it's 19th May.

Yes, I agree with you entirely.

My point is this: If you knew that cheating would fuck your mod that you'd worked hard on for an extended period of time, wouldn't you want to try and prevent that from happening?

I dunno, I'd just feel a little sting knowing that people might potentially discard my wad having rendered it unplayable with a mere idcheat.

Then again, that's pride fucking with me. Fuck pride. Pride only hurts, it never helps.

Whoops, wrong thread.

Yeah, I suppose there would be a slight (very slight) element of disappointment if I saw someone saying (for example) "well I noclipped into the final room but the monsters just stood there, this WAD sucks". But the obvious answer to that is don't noclip into the final room and the monsters won't just stand there. You cheated WTF do you expect?

Anyone reading a comment like the above would realise what had happened. And to be fair, I've cheated in games before and spotted the AI doing something it clearly wasn't intended to do, or found a door not opening etc etc. I knew I'd cheated, I knew I'd probably not activated something, or activated something at the wrong time, or whatever. I knew it was my fault. I just laughed at the reminder that the gaming AI really wasn't "intelligent" at all, but nothing more than a series of scripted events and set and unset variables. Then went back and played it properly. No harm done and I knew that my cheating didn't impact on whether the game sucked or not.

Anyone who types in a cheat at any time in any game should know that they are potentially breaking the flow of the game. So let them do it, because they are going to anyway.

As an aside, my biggest gripe with the first 2 Thief games is that there are no useful cheat codes. For me, having them would have extended the gameplay further. Mind you, I still play them. However, I'd have loved to just be able to noclip to a section of a level that I enjoyed, or skip past an annoying bit, or give myself a bit more health etc etc to enhance my enjoyment at a particular point at a particular time on an individual occasion. But that wasn't an option. I had to play it "seriously" and "realistically" yeah right. Suck it down. I'm some guy sitting in my house in front of a computer. I'm not a thief in some fantasy steam-punk medieval/victorian/magical city flitting from rooftop to rooftop.

Well, in my case, if it weren't for cheat codes my mod couldn't be made. I use FLY in console commands bound to keystrokes to have the player fly around. I also don't want people to select the default player skin and use the FLY cheat as that would screw things up as well.

So, the solution to my issue is to change the cheat codes to make it more difficult for people to get them.

Why not just tell them that screwing with cheat codes also screws the mod and leave it up to them? If they go ahead and cheat - so what?

Only if they use the standard Doom cheat codes. I know plenty of people only cheat via the console anyway. So you wouldn't catch them. And as you say, it only makes it more difficult - not impossible. A dehacked patch with changed cheat codes would stop me for - oh, I dunno, less than a minute.

Well, the reason it's a big deal is because I don't want those people playing with ME there. It totally screws everything up. Like I said, it only stops so many people, but it sure doesn't make it easy for them. Plus, I was thinking about hard-coding the changes anyway- not that you still wouldn't be able to figure it out, but at least they wouldn't know what to look for.

What I meant by "tell them" is have it in the text file. Or if you think that won't get read, and it's that important, flash it up on screen at the start of the game with a hudmessage.
