You'd just have to ring up/go to the bank to get your card cancelled and get a new one. Lost, stolen and otherwise compromised cards are a common enough event that the processes for this sort of thing are pretty well established by now.

can a thief even buy anything on your stolen card, though? most of the times i've bought anything, i'd have to enter my PIN code and use a little device from my bank to confirm the purchase.

Every single online purchase that I've ever made only required information available directly from the credit card for it to work.

So if you've had your card stolen you best bust your ass before everything is suddenly empty.
