That's because they are midi's but not midi files... they're Mus'... so you'll need to convert them with mus2midi or something else... Be warned, they will only sound as good as your sound card (none of that OPL emulation or anything, unless you can find a dedicated OPL synth for windows or summet).

Note that even though SB16's have OPL3 chips, under Windows it won't sound like you hear in Doom. The only external player that I've seen recreate the OPL synth sound you hear in Doom is Vladamir Arnost's Musplay (is that the name? it's been too long). ZDoom fakes it, and while doing a great job is heavy on the CPU.

Beats me. As far as I'm concerned, a good wavetable synth makes the Doom music sound so much more immersive. You can get one for free as long as you have difital sound output (Timidity + a good wavetable patch set). You can even add chorus and reverb effects to make it sound that much more realistic, which the original music couldn't do.

Because MIDI's will never sound realistic unless considerations are taken for individual files. Even the legendary Chaos Bank doesn't make, say, the Descent soundtrack sound better. I figure, it's a friggin' MIDI file, and if it sounded that way in 1993, it may as well sound like it now. I still have fond memories of the "Jill of the Jungle" soundtrack making such great usage of the OPL chip, and I can't experience that again unless I play the game. And what if I want to just listen to the music? I can go download some crappy rip-pack, but it won't sound the same.Graf Zahl wrote:Why do so many people want to have such an inferior means of playing MIDI's?
