W = Foward
S = Backward
A = Strafe Left
D = Strafe Right
Mouse 1 (left) = Fire
Mouse 2 (middle) = Jump
Mouse 3 (right) = AltFire
Space = Open
R = Reload (if map supports it)
TAB = Map
F = Freeze (mapping purposes)
Scroll Up = Next Weapon
Scroll Down = Previous Weapon

So yea, people are different with their keyboard setup, even though it looks weird.

And all of them are a downward stroke (I am assuming you are not counting the weapon buttons). It's easier for me to move upwards than downwards.

I'm counting Tab, Q, Caps Lock, A, S, F, L. Shift, Z, X, C, and V. In addition, T, G, and B are one row to the right and of course 1-5 are easily accessible above, for a total of 19 "auxiliary" keys requiring minimal finger movement.

When playing a game using this layout, my pinky actually rests on A, while my other fingers rest on W, E, R. In fact, depending on the game it's sometimes easier just to rest them on the home row (ASDF) and reach up when I need access to movement. (WOW is especially suited for this) F, S, and A provide very easily accessible keys for frequently-used actions or abilities, Q, T and G are only slightly harder to reach, and I reserve Z, X, C, V, and B for infrequently used abilities that are nevertheless handy to have available at a moment's notice. By their nature, Tab, Caps Lock, and Shift have limited uses depending on the game, so they only rarely get assigned with functions. What baffles me is the common practice of using WASD which moves your pinky to the nearly useless (depending on game) Caps Lock key and sacrifices three general purpose keys in the bargain, with no gain whatsoever.

Here's my key layout for ZDoom if anyone's interested:

W/R - Strafe
E/D - Forward/Back
A - Run/Walk
S - Use
G - Use Item
Q - Stop Flying
Z - Fly/Swim Down
X - Drop Weapon
C - Prev Item
V - Next Item
T - Talk
F - Toggle Zoom
Tab - Automap
Space - Jump/Swim/Fly Up
Mouse1 - Fire
Mouse2 - Alt Fire
MWheelUp - Prev Weapon
MWheelDn - Next Weapon

Atually, what is starting to feel comfy is SDCV. The pinky rests on Shift easily but has to strain to reach Ctrl. It's still easier to reach keys above the fingers than below, so this gives me about equal access to QWERAFZXBG- er, ten keys and T is just slightly out of reach.

I've already posted this like 100,000 times but one more won't hurt.

Forward: Mouse 3 (thumb button)
Backward: Left Shift
Strafe Left: Z
Strafe Right: X
Fire: Mouse 1
Altfire: Left Alt
Jump: Mouse 2
Use/Open: Spacebar
Use Inventory: Left Ctrl
Inventory Next: S
Inventory Prev: A
Fly/Move Up: D
Fly/Move Down: C
Chasecam: Q
Crouch: V (I really with hitting "Move Down" while on the ground would crouch)

I like my system a lot, an have used it since I first started playing games. My brother and I are the only ones I know of that use a (basic version of this) setup.

EDIT: This is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw "Disco" on that key list:

Note that I totally have no idea who made this anim.

I dunno. The first time I saw it, someone posted it in the ZDoom Fake Screenshots thread, then someone (I believe it was Enjay) made a wad about it :lol:
