It's a shame that it's totally owned by any non-melee weapon.

That just means you don't give the player any ranged weapons before you fight it (if it's used in a mod). Then again, not giving the player any ranged weapons for some time would totally suck.

Or have some sort of thing in which you take away the players ranged weapons for the fight, that way you could BFG your way through the level, but have to go toe to toe with the monster.
