So, yes. It's very realistic, because a V90 modem will be able to use all the available speed up 'till this level.

Kbps not KBps. There's a difference, and that's about the speed I had with dialup. Thank god for cable modems.

I somehow once got 9KB/s from HOTU on dial-up. Most of the time it was 4.4KB/s.

If you have data compression on, you can get some data (mostly text) faster. If something compresses better as it's sent to to, you'll get a higher throughput (which is why compressed archives don't really ever go that fast over dialup, as opposed to text pages.. the modem can't compress it any further).

It had compression on. The file was STRIFE1.WAD.

Sorry, but yes, at least when I used it. But this was around 5 years ago before I got a cable modem. I'm never going back. EVER.

That would explain it. WAD files aren't compressed, so your modem's compression would help transfer faster.

I think that's only in the U.S. though, as Bio Hazard said (and maybe in Canada too).
