Which do you prefer? Doom 3 or Doom 4?
I think Doom 4 is better due to it seemingly going back to its roots, with vaguely Doom 2-ish weapons, and the curious inclusion of Brutal Doom features.
However, Doom 3 was also pretty good, at the time. It's not a good game to be playing when you are drunk, because it is very possible to get lost in some of the early maps (sometimes even when you are sober), but it had a great storyline, which fleshed out the whole thing much better than Doom 1/2's story. I played it again about 2 months ago, but I had to go to moddb to add some new textures because it kinda doesn't really hold up that well.
I'm not a fan of Doom 2 because I tend to get bored about a quarter of the way through the game, and the icon of sin battle is kinda lame (moreso now since we can look up and down, and just toss a bfg round in its head). Honestly, the only version of original Doom that I truly love is Shareware Doom. I can literally play through every map in Episode 1 and not get bored. Sure, Doom 1 and 2 have a massive modding community, but some of the original levels haven't quite held up all that well over the years. I actually prefer Sgt Mark IV's "Brutal Doom Starter Kit" megawad over the actual Doom 2 levels (even if he did manage to sneak in a little racism that almost nobody has commented on). And nowadays I tend to play that megawad with the D4D (Doom 4 for Doom) mod.
Now, don't get me wrong... when shareware Doom was released, and eventually Doom 1, and Doom 2, I thought they were the greatest things since sliced butter. But then Quake came out.

Countless games since the mid-90's have had takedown animations. It's like, you know, not exactly the most original idea.
I've never even seen past the first couple minutes of Doom 3, it looked drab and very mid-2000 in its tone. It also really reminds me of a lot of the over-dark over-serious indie horror games like Outlast.

So you prefer Doom 4 over 3?
I actually liked the plot of some Quake games over what Doom 3 offered... (excluding obviously the one Quake that was multiplayer only)
It would be interesting if Doom 5 merged some Quake themes with the Doom themes. I mean, they are two very huge id software properties, and both are vaguely Hell related. And of course, some Quake games had better multiplayer games.

I would have preferred if Doom 4's level designers didn't just give up half way through and turn the game into Serious Sam with hell levels and upgrade points. Speaking of which, upgrades themselves broke the game a bit for me, and so did the lack of saving and numerous points of no return in the later levels. The unimaginative hell levels and repeated boss also soured the game for me too, although to a lesser extent. Overall a 7.5/10 for me at best.

I haven't played Doom 2016, but i really like Doom 3 and it's easily my favourite Doom game, because i like slow-paced horror games and i have a lot of fond memories about Doom 3.
I definitely agree with your name, Doom 3 Doesnt Suck.

Can't play Doom 4 due to lack of compatible hardware. Doom 3 still counts as one of the biggest disappointment in gaming ever for me, so I cannot say I prefer any of 'em. The rampant DRM on modern games means that I wouldn't buy them anyway. I see no point wasting money on something I cannot resell when I get tired of it. In the past gaming was cheap for me. I bought used and I resold when I was through and knew I wouldn't play it again. That's not possible anymore and no modern game offers the replay value that justifies the high prices. On rare occasions I got one from the bargain bin, but the aesthetics of post-Doom3 games do not appeal to me anymore.

I'd suggest keeping an eye out for steam sales. You can even put a game onto your wishlist so you get an email when it receieves a discount.
Doom 4 is 50% off currently (got over a day left atm)
http://store.steampowered.com/app/379720/
If you're against steam and digital copies, you can still do the used-game thing on the console market.
I can only recommend it. It's everything I wanted out of a successor as far as the campaign goes. The level editing and multiplayer are so-so, but overall not bad.
As for Doom 3, I thought it was okay. Not great by any means, it should not have been part of the franchise but on its own it would've passed nicely as a horror action game. I hate the shotgun's spread with a firey passion and the encounters get very tiresome and same-old towards the end (especially in the expansion with the vulgars) but it would have been worth playing through once.

Re: Which do you prefer? Doom 3 or Doom 4?
What bothered me about Doom 3 was it was slower compared to the classic games and the fact there was too much gray if anything. That and despite me liking the new Hell Knights, The monster redesigns ranged from okay (Archvile and Revenants looked like their classic counterparts enough) to downright terrible. (The Cacodemon was just plain ass and looked nothing like they should.)
I'm fine with trying to make Doom more scary but action itself was what it was about, Not horror. PSX Doom (and Doom 4) did this aspect better IMO.

i'm p. sure that Doom was considered as somewhat horror back in the day, though, what with the dimly lit corridors of E1 and the demons lurking in the dark. Doom 3 just took the horror aspect a bit further (but failed to make anything actually threatening and scary due to how powerful you are), and Doom 4 took the action a step further (but made the horror aspect pretty nonexistant in the process.) i'm sure there's a way to make you feel like a badass while also make Hell and the demons seem incredibly intimidating.
Re: Which do you prefer? Doom 3 or Doom 4?
Doom 3 is good on is own way, it give horror to a game of fast action as the opposite of RE that from horror is more action now XD
Doom 4 is out of my reach so nohing new to say there

What? You don't remember the draconian DRM on games like Monkey Island and Leisure Suit Larry?Graf Zahl wrote:Can't play Doom 4 due to lack of compatible hardware. Monkey Island was especially bad. If you had a pirated copy, and you tried to go inside a certain tree stump, the game would ask for hundreds of nonexistant disks until you ragequit. It also prevented you from learning new insults.

Are you sure it's really that different, and everyone isn't just jaded now? I think it's really not that different, and everyone is just jaded now.Viscra Maelstrom wrote:i'm p. sure that Doom was considered as somewhat horror back in the day [...] Doom 4 took the action a step further (but made the horror aspect pretty nonexistant in the process.) i'm sure there's a way to make you feel like a badass while also make Hell and the demons seem incredibly intimidating.
Doom 3's main problem is that it can't decide if it's a horror shooter, an action shooter, or a tactical shooter. In the process, it's bad at all three. I already had my doubts by the time I was shut in a small room with an imp, which proceeded to eat bullets and spit damage. I'm pretty patient with BS video games (I played through Halo 2 twice) but this was the first time I ragequit and immediately uninstalled a game.
In the original Doom games, monsters significantly react to being shot. Doom 3's don't. (I have a similar problem with Half-Life 2, which is why I stopped playing that, too.) If I found a mod for that somewhere, I might give D3 another chance.

If I wanted a game that couldn't make up its mind about being a first person shooter or a horror game I'd play Geist. To be honest I quite liked it despite the puzzles directly competing with the shooter pace.

Hell Knights are pretty much the only redesign that everyone agrees is awesome. They returned in Doom 4 for a reason.Clownman wrote:What bothered me about Doom 3 was it was slower compared to the classic games and the fact there was too much gray if anything.
