To the people saying Mediafire is crap - I've been using MF for more than 5 years and I can safely say that I have not lost a single file since the beginning. If you're losing files, you're doing something wrong, mate.

I almost lost a file to DB's misguided syncing efforst. (Only preserved it because I still had it open in a program on one system...) You have to watch deleting files from disk, because it'll happily sync that change to the cloud server rather than redownload the file. It also likes to puke "conflicts" at the stupidest times. (At least it doesn't install into AppData like malware any more.) How's this clunky heap an industry leader? "Because it's free" is my only good guess.

I know that, NS. It's kinda out of context, but I talked about Mediafire because I remember people complaining about the lack of security or something with Mediafire. No such thing. It's 100% safe to back-up your things there with no chance of ever losing them.

Relatively speaking. There's always the chance they may decide to go paid-only like ImageShack did. (I remember when SpeedyShare tried to do this. It didn't go well and they quickly went back to free service. MF probably knows better.) Also, sometimes seemingly fine services just go down for whatever reason. (See: MajHost. BrickShelf still lives, so apparently the maintainers abruptly decided to can MajHost with no warning.)

I have had a couple issues with MediaFire: First is that their ad service is apparently a huge problem for a lot of people, and while I've never had this problem myself, it makes it awkward to use the site for download hosting. Secondly, I have a few bookmarks to public directories of interesting stuff, which no longer work because of changes in processing (and lack of translation for the URLs).

You know I haven't released anything major in ~6 years? Still, I've slung a lot of code in the meantime, and helping out other people can be just as worthwhile as making something of your own.

... No, it just means that it's possible your account security has been compromised, and that you should change your password. My account received that mail and I had zero misuse listed on the recent users panel.

Try logging off and log back in, if it asks you to change your password, then it was compromised.

I had access to my account via web, then I did that. Guess what happened.

On another note:

The original data hack was a result of a Dropbox employee using the same password for his LinkedIn account as for his Dropbox account. (The first major LinkedIn hack was also in 2012.)

So far mine didn't ask me for a password change. I don't have that many important files there anyway and does it help if my Dropbox doesn't turn on unless I wanted to? The very last link provided in the article from above (the one that checks your email if you're compromised somewhere), I wonder if it's helpful..

i've changed my password out of precaution of this hack, regardless. and if my account should get hacked, i have all my files not only backed up on my OneDrive, but also two external harddrives. so i think i'm fairly safe from actually losing anything important.
