Time to move on. (Generic Goodbye Thread)
Hello.
As some of you might know, I have not really done anything the last months. With the loss of my new attempt at a project, I feel like I'm done with Doom Modding. Was kind of fun the last years, but it I feel like its over for me. Dropbox fucked up a 30MB file, while I thought its safe to put it in there when resetting my PC. Turns out, it wasn't. Only really old backups exist, and motivation to even open Slade3 or GZDB have been 0 for the last weeks. Months of work: Gone. Might have also been my fault, but it already happened.
Sure, I could make some shovelware Gameplaymod. But really, as I can not create custom graphics or music, there is no way that would turn out to really have some kind of dignity. I want to make something new. And I seriously have no motivation to put any more effort into it. I think I'll have to move on and do something else.
And if I can not contribute anything to a community (As said: Cant do sprites, graphics, music, sounds, cant animate...), and especially after losing my last attempt at something, I really do not feel like there is much for me to do here. All I've been doing lately was Off-Topic-Postings. That is not why I came here a few years ago. At least then, I had something to share. Sure, it was a piece of shit, but it was something. Now, I have nothing, and I doubt there will be anything in the future.
Thank you for your support throughout my time here. Hope you'll have a nice time.

As much as I can understand having lost a lot of work (I've been through that at least once), I don't see why you should leave the forums entirely. As for your "can'ts", the only real solution to that is to be willing to learn and practice. Chuck Jones said it best: "Every artist has thousands of bad drawings in them and the only way to get rid of them is to draw them out."

Why does this keep happening? Doom mapper/modder is making mod, something happens, they just quit? If I lost my maps and had no backups (which reminds me I need to do a backup of all my irreplaceable shit very soon) I'd remake them again but even better. Hell I'm already planning to do that because my mapping skill improved a lot within a short time after making my original ones. Or if I had real life shit to do, I'd still work on my stuff because Doom > work.

Although i advise you to reconsider, if you already made up your mind about it then i'll just offer you a goodbye and good luck on whatever you do after.
We may have not interacted at all, but i really understand that lack of motivation.

Stop working alone and you won't feel the lack of motivation due to having to do everything on your own again. Not to mention that someone will also have a backup in that case. Tell me what you can and I'll tell you if there's a spot on my team for Dishonored. If you want, PM me.

The kinsman knows what's up.
Seriously though. No one ever quits doom modding for good. You may think so right now, but you'll be back with a fresh idea and/or renewed strength to continue work on your old backups.
Doom modding is sort of an art form, you get the inspiration at the most unexpected of times and it will have you hooked.
ps it's silly to leave a forum just because you feel you can only contribute in the off topic. This place feels like home to me, and the only doom stuff I've done in like, 8 years is show a couple of WIP screenshots in offtopic

Dude, just hang around! I haven't "seriously" modded for probably a decade now. I'm not saying my goodbyes anytime soon, because this community is like home to me.
Take a break if you gotta, but no reason to cut it off entirely.

At least you have an old backup '-', my old quake 2 TC Project that I almost finished the first level, pfff nothing more (ok just some pretty outdated gameplay recording).
And with that I learned the lesson, even if you trust in your media, get an online backup, because you can end up robbed

One thing I've learned that others have hinted at is nothing is more valuable than the "media" already in your head.
That being said, never *ever* do a "full reset" (reformat) of a PC. It just really isn't worth it. If you can, back up everything to another location. It's possible to reinstall Windows and get that "freshness" (speed, reliability, eliminate stupid viruses, etc) without losing all your old crap. I don't know what people's obsessions with reformatting your drive for Windows is - it serves no real purpose. It might be more difficult to get a "clean" install but it is doable - especially with newer versions (Vista and later, maybe?) now that it's the only install type you can do when you boot directly from installation media.
Putting your work on Dropbox was a good idea. If it was that valuable though, you should've downloaded it and made sure that the copy you had was still intact.

To the people saying Mediafire is crap - I've been using MF for more than 5 years and I can safely say that I have not lost a single file since the beginning. If you're losing files, you're doing something wrong, mate.

How about just using an external hard drive?
I have a 2 TB and use it all the time. Literally have not lost anything in the years I have had it. Back up regularly and you will never run into this sort of issue. There not too expensive either. $70 at Bestbuy and you got yourself all the gigs you will most likely need for a few years.

we've all had hardware failures and lost stuff we have been working on for months, its a horrible feeling and yes the motivation is completely gone, I agree 100% that you should invest in a external hardrive, that would be the best option for backing up your work. We've all had that happen and taken a short hiatus, but then you will find your motivation again I promise.

Let's just say I haven't been super involved with Doom modding or even playing lately, but ZDoom Forums to me is home. I know once I get some time on my hands again I'll be able to pick back up and make some small weapon mods to familiarize myself with the latest tools.
Might I recommend hanging around in the community anyway and still playing mods?
