not free DLC. all the MP DLC you have to pay for. you may, however, have heard about the new Party Play feature, which basically means you can play on the new MP maps if a friend happens to own the DLC, i think.

Wait. Isn't this basically. "Qix" ?4thcharacter wrote:Most games back then look like they were designed by a groggy old man when it comes to dialogue so I think Castlevania 2's problem is just mistranslation or something. I don't know about collecting but do those Nintendo power magazines increase in value?
However, between F2P and arcades he does have a point. If you are skilled enough you can beat some arcade games with only just one coin. There are some F2P games that are just borderline or pure bullshit.
Case in point: Volfied from Taito. I used to play this game on a PC because it's one of the games that Taito Legends has, and it's pretty hard unless you learn how to finish stages with one move.

I think the people who're failing to see the link between arcade games and P2W games are missing one essential detail:
Arcade games, during their prime, were mainly played by kids and teenagers.
P2W games' whales are usually adults.
A typical adult is going to have far more expendable income than someone younger than them. This means that of course the arcade games that were less bullshit were more popular; no matter how addicting a game was, if it took too much of your cash than a typical arcade player couldn't afford to sustain it. So, arcade games that relied on such tactics faded into obscurity as they just didn't have the playerbase to support them, while the ones that got popular were the ones that you still had to dump a hundred quarters into it get good, but once you got good you could play for far less cash.
Really, it's just aiming at the proper audience now. Bullshit moneysinks have always existed ( just look at Tower of Druaga ) it's just that it's far less taboo for the people who actually want to play those games to play them.

I heard about Party Play, which sounds nice if you have lots of friends with new Doom.Viscra Maelstrom wrote:not free DLC. all the MP DLC you have to pay for. you may, however, have heard about the new Party Play feature, which basically means you can play on the new MP maps if a friend happens to own the DLC, i think.
Is Unto the Evil free or not? I am finding contradictory news on it.

Multiplayer DLC is not free, Snapmap DLC is. Unto the Evil was preceded by Free Update 2, which contained a whole heap of new toys for Snapmap.shotfan wrote:I heard about Party Play, which sounds nice if you have lots of friends with new Doom.

So, it seems they for example had Harvester around since alpha and put it away for a paid DLC. Damn, even id does this in current days... way to go, guys. This does not help them with my decision to purchase the game.

companies always wanted your money
they're just more blatant about it nowadays, and delivering a product worth the cost is often an afterthought (if it's even part of the process at all; there are plenty of developers out there who specifically aim to provide you with something that is worth far less than what you're paying for it, beyond the level of "making a reasonable profit")

Arcade game coin stealing: games where you have to play in order to learn what to do. Japan apparently loved this style of game because it meant as long as you had the skill and had the key knowledge, you could beat it in one sitting. The Super Spy isn't exactly the greatest example of it, but holy god one cc'ing that game is an exercise in patience.
F2P money stealing: locking huge progress jumps behind a paywall. There is no way to blast through these games, you're either going to have to spend far too long in time to get past the barrier, or pay up. Candy Crushers even tailored its match 3 or more goal in such a way where you can see exactly where you're being held for ransom. Seriously, go play Kinghtfall series instead. It's actually more interesting as a concept.
Also, ever seen a F2P idle game? Zombidle is a great example: it has a currency you can buy for in game goodies, but they're not completely pay2win despite being huge time progress jumps, because how do you win at an idle game? Plus, they tell you the whole reason they want your money is to further their goals in making console games. What a company does with your money is important. Alternatively, if you don't wanna spend money, just watch a 15 second ad. It's even a bit tongue in cheek about spamming your friends on Facebook for rewards.

It's intended to be a follow-up to that game, I believe.

"Free to play" my ass. Microtransactions will be the DEATH of gaming if anything, Nobody gets a free pass even if the base game is good - Weither it be TF2 with it's item space and crates or ROBLOX with it's bullshit currency system. (Which is why I quit long ago.)
Mobile Games are especially on my shitlist for their microtransaction crimes, It needs to stop.

Bad gams have always existed, and the PC platform is the leader in that area. Damn, indie games are the absolute leader in asking money for realy bad games. Then there where the Arcade machines. They had a lot of games with a difficulty which forced you to spend at least 5 dollar or Euro (or any currency that was the equivalent at the time) to even be able to call it a playable game. Arcade games arent even fun without the thrill of losing money when you lose in game.
I have seen a lot of Great free to play RPG and FPS that give you a hell of a lot of game just for free. Everything on earth has rotten apples, just dont focus on them. Also, DLC are just the evolution of the CDROM based expansion packs from the 90's and early 00's. Those old expansion packs where a rip-off too at times.
