Re: The games/levels you were most scared of during childhoo
I think I was most scared by the first level of Serious Sam: The First Encounter, back when I was around 8 years old. Another scary "level" is the atmosphere in Omicron Delta in the game Freelancer. I don't remember if the system was originally in the game; I think it was part of Discovery Mod. Either way, the old music and system background texture (video is with new music) sure helped for a creepy experience. But if you want real fear, go to Omicron-92. That shit's scary, man.

I completely forgot to mention MAP32. Mainly because I used to always play on HNTR rather than HMP or UV. Everything was quiet, the music was chilling to me back then because it would always end up climaxing as soon as that door opened, and I was always unaware of the secret weapons until later. And when that screen flashed red with that loud ass scream, I'd run away from the computer. Of course it wasn't the same on other levels because there were other enemies so it didn't feel as eerie.

I dont exactly remember any locations in a game that made me scarred back when i was young,it was more about the enemies if i remember.
I always felt nervous when going to a cave where those jumping and screeching reptiles were in Turok 1,same for the raptors when i heard them stomping around and coming toward my direction.
In Turok 3,i always got tense when there was a section of the game where enemies keep re-spawning like those aquatic creatures near the aquatic boss room in the underground of the military level,or the voodoo painted like guy in chapter 4 (the lost land) that keep spawning as long as the other one keep doing surgical stuff on the dead body,it's just below the boss guy holding the key that you must defeat by droping him on some spike or hot stones i think.
Nemesis in Resident Evil 3 always made me nervous,i didnt like fighting him because it was hard for me and even nowadays i still have difficulties fighting him since im not good with the dodging ability yet.I also got very nervous when i was near the window in the police department since that's where he always come in crashing and finally the fact that it's hard to outrun him since he can follow you into other rooms and he's wicked fast when catching up to you.
Same for MR.X from Resident Evil 2,yeah sure he wasnt as difficult as Nemesis, but all the moments he showed up and with the loud music added to it,it was scary for me.

Changing discs is also redundant in some games. If you only wanted to play as another outsider, you must put disc 1, and if you beaten it, put disc 2. Repeat. (you may wonder that I'm talking about the PC version of Resident Evil 2)

I remember the map in Blake Stone where you first fight the electric aliens, it terrified me because they seemed to spawn endlessly and there was no way of destroying the portal that they came out of and as a small child I dread the maps that they were on because just as you thought you'd killed the last one, you would turn around later on in the level and one has snuck up behind you.

Some people thought Hitler's face exploding was the coolest. I didn't put together that Master-D was supposed be Hitler until much later. Needless to say, dude's her exploding was a bit graphic for me at that age.

When I was about four or five, 7th Guest used to creep me the hell out for some reason.

When I was around 7, I was provided with a hand-me-down Macintosh and a box of old cover CDs to keep me entertained after school. On one of these discs, I happened upon the demo version of System Shock. I tried it, promptly got my ass handed to me and saw this cutscene.
Needless to say, it was at least 10 years before I gave the game another ago.

I remember when i was a kid i was scared of the looping forest in Brave Fencer Musashi, and also when the town had weird humanoid monsters going around.

Oh my god yes. I absolutely loved episode 2 for its spooky feeling of isolation, especially the map you mentioned, Dark Side, which really captures the whole episode in a nutshell for me. The Incubator level also fills me with dread as I near the infested reactor at the end. Honorable mention goes to the secret levels Lunatic Fringe(if Duke had nightmares, it'd be like this) and Spin Cycle, with the latter feeling weirdly surreal since it's such a wide open space moving so silently the way it does.Hisymak wrote: Everything will be about episode 2, as this is my most favourite DN3D episode (and my most favourite game episode overally, because it takes place in the space and Moon and I like environments like this as I also liked Star Trek and so on). The most mysterious level for me is E2L8 as this is quite big level with a moody music and you walk there directly on the moon. And... There is that room with a Monolith with very eerie sound near the exit, which I was always extremely scared of! That sound was terrifying.
As for other games, Blood had a hell of a lot of nope moments in the first two episodes, with episode 2 once again being the most atmospheric over all. Love those string of levels taking place in and around the Cabal-controlled resort area. Also, dat painting, mang. Dat painting in the book store in E1M2. Oh and the freakshow area in the circus level. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

When I was young I had to build up courage before going into dark, green slime rooms in Duke 3D (and the PSX version). They would be filled with Octabrains and Protozoids, it was pretty darn creepy. Like that area at the end of the Sushi bar.

for all of Duke's immature humor and pop-culture references, it sure had one hell of an atmospheric soundtrack, i say. Episode 2 is just filled with these creepy tracks you wouldn't think to associate with him, but it sure helps giving the game a more atmospheric feel.
