The games/levels you were most scared of during childhood

Post by Hisymak »

As most of you probably played computer games during early childhood, there most likely were some places, levels, monsters etc. which you were really scared of and you could not pass or finish them just because of your strong fear. Even if you can beat them very easily nowdays.

I will personally talk about Duke Nukem 3D as this is the game with most rememberable places like this.
Everything will be about episode 2, as this is my most favourite DN3D episode (and my most favourite game episode overally, because it takes place in the space and Moon and I like environments like this as I also liked Star Trek and so on). The most mysterious level for me is E2L8 as this is quite big level with a moody music and you walk there directly on the moon. And... There is that room with a Monolith with very eerie sound near the exit, which I was always extremely scared of! That sound was terrifying. And moreover, that monolith is actually a teleport which teleports you into some alien-occupied room (also scary) and there were really lot of octabrains which suddenly appeared from nowhere and killed me. Ugh. Every time I played the level I passed that ending area very fast just to reach the exit and not look anywhere around.
The final nevel was not much better. I was very scared of the final boss and refused to fight it for several years, so that was the last boss in game I beat (not counting E4 because I didn't have Atomic Edition that time).
E2L4 and E2L5 were also levels I was always afraid of, especially the ending room in E2L4 and whole E2L5, which I consider being the hardest level in the game at all, because of really lot of hard monsters in it (Assault Captains and Battlelords!). Also the ending room in E2L4 was the first time I encountered an Assault Captain in my life. I had just a pistol in my hand, flied up with jetpack and landed before the final area door. It opened automatically, and an Assault Captain appeared with terrifying screams and totally taken me down with one or two hits from his rocket launcher. I was not prepared and defenceless. The following night I had a even dream about that. Of course it took some time to me to pluck up and beat that place.

On the other hand, Doom was not really much scary for me IIRC, that was probably because I got and played Doom later than Duke Nukem 3D.

well, i'm not sure this qualifies for this thread but up until I was about 12 I was deathly afraid of heights "still afraid to this day but it does not effect me much anymore" and that fear also was present in some video games and levels I played " Primarily Levels with Platforming (Excluding 2d sidescrollers and games on handheld) and the later prologue levels in Max Payne 1 (i had to get my dad to complete them due to me being so freaked out of the level's themes)". But eventually my fear died down drastically over the years so it is not so much of a problem.

Yes at I was scared of platforming sections in levels, It still somewhat freaks me out but that normally happens when recording the footage so I can upload to YT but other than that Platforming seems to be just a pain in my ass.

The Severed Hand Enemy in Blood 1 also scared the shit of me when i first played it " I was 9 at the time", Especially when it choked me and i did not know how to get it off so it killed me.

But other than that in my 20 years of being alive I have not been scared of anything else in video games.

You don't know true vertigo until you've tried playing Facing Worlds in Unreal Tournament, with both Jumpmatch and Low Gravity mutators enabled, and Air Control set to zero. If you even dare press that Jump button, you stand just as much chance smacking into the enemy base as you do flying clear off the asteroid and into deep space.

Been there, done that. Favourite map and mutator combo, right after same mutators on Lava Giant. Anyone up for some team play? I think a server is still possible to create, I remember playing a few years ago with some guys I didn't even know without any external programs. I got UT '99 GOTY.

If there is interest, I'll look up making a server or we'll just use one of the many, if they work.

Requiem: Avenging Angel is probably the only game to scare me in recent memory... though that might be because I wasn't anticipating it. Screenshots looked creepy, but games like Half-Life or Doom never scared me, so I went for it.
The first level is basically flesh-caves with eerie moans (?) in the background. At one point some old man wedged inside tells you to "stop" and that he's "suffered enough." All of it, of course, rendered in that characteristic low-poly style with uncanny valley-level textures. I quit the game shortly thereafter and have yet to return to it.

EDIT: Okay, okay, it technically wasn't a childhood memory, but I don't have many of those. (I also still consider this portion of my life to be my childhood despite being 21.)

the alien in maniac mansion is my earliest remembered scary. Never played the fractalus game where he came from (which was scarier)

Same here. Even the dogs scared me. Fiends made me scream. Everything looked so realistic back then...
Episode 4 is the scariest.
It stopped scaring me mostly after finding the god cheat code and letting monsters attack me so I could get used to it.

Some parts in Doom scared me, too, but it was more cartoony so I still could play it.

Prince of persia still creeps me out.

The blue blobs, Spawn I think they were called. Creeped me out in Quake. Still sort of do.

The Cave of Bad Dreams from Rayman 2. It was the spooky music that did it.

When I was smaller, I was pretty freaked out by the "glowing eyes in the dark" thing. I was anxious about the dark areas in Return to Zork, not because of the dark itself, but thanks to the game over graphic.

Not sure if it counts: I used to get vertigo pretty easily from games, falling off levels in Rise of the Triad was one of the odder sources of that. (Nowadays I can fling myself across te map in Garry's Mod and not have too much trouble. Games with "fall off the world" areas can still get me at times, though.)

My first encounter with the Iron Liches in Heretic. they were unalerted andfacing away at the time. Being kind of dumb, I walked right up to them to see what they were. (It would've been much worse if their sight sound were more sudden and shrill, like a Revenant for instance...) I wasn't that young at the time and it didn't do much to me long-term.

I have no frightening memories of Doom at all, hilariously.

Ocarina Of Time, the Deku Tree dungeon. I was terrified of that level when I first played it. Maybe it was the skulltulas. Maybe it was the music. I don't know, but I was scared of it for some reason.

Doom 64. The whole frigging game scared me when I played it for the very first time. I got the game for my birthday years ago, because I saw gameplay of it on youtube and I wanted to try it out. I was just getting into horror related stuff back then, and with an FPS with a bunch of creepy and terrifying demons that are trying to kill you, I wanted in on this kind of action. But hell, when I first started playing, I was so scared that I didn't play the game for a week after that. After that, I found a cheat code to access everything, and I played Doom 64 with god mode on all the time, because I wasn't brave enough. Now these days, I could play Doom 64 without flinching.

Well, those are my picks.
