Heretic 2. Your thoughts, opinions, and insights.

I liked the bow and the polearm. Jump-kicking people in the face with the polearm never gets old.

Heretic Gaiden. (It's not even an FPS, for sphere's sake.)
I never thought much of this since seeing the intro movie. The battle with Skeletor D'Sparil ("nyeh heh heh"), talking Tome of Power (lol) and jump-cut directly into whatever else (uncanonizing eps. 4 & 5, which weren't that impressive story-wise but still).
The main character got an official name and that's about it.
I know I don't feel so bad about being frugal with Tomes any more, seeing as there's apparently only seven of them in existence.

And somehow there are 23 of them in Raven's Wolfenstein, implying either they've multiplied, or that 16 of them are Nazi forgeries.NeuralStunner wrote:I know I don't feel so bad about being frugal with Tomes any more, seeing as there's apparently only seven of them in existence.

I don't remember much about this game but I did think the gameplay and some of the settings were nice. I don't think it belonged under the Heretic IP though, maybe having it as a different IP would have made a difference.

For 10, you should be able to use merlin86's instructions in this post: https://www.doomworld.com/vb/post/1423716Kinsie wrote:By "modern" I mean Windows 10 and a GTX670. Got any instructions on what DLLs I'd need to replace?
Supposedly, some graphics cards do work without the renderer patch, you can test and see (if it crashes when you try to enter a level, you probably need the quake2.dll patch). I can only confirm that a Radeon HD 6450 does not work without the patch.
WhiteMagicRaven's "unofficial v1.07" also did not work with Windows 10 (at least on my computer).
Also, it appears that SuperSomariDX is correct, running the setup exe from in the "setup" folder on the CD instead of the one in the root directory worked without any tweaks.
This is indeed one of the more fun mechanics the game has to offer.Gez wrote:Jump-kicking people in the face with the polearm never gets old.

I supposed this game would be fun, but when I realized it was not a FPS anymore(not a fan of TP/TPS game
) and I lost all my interests for it, damn.
But did checked some gameplay videos, I like it, just too bad I won't try it...

Re: Heretic 2. Your thoughts, opinions, and insights.
I was a bit jarred by the fact that the game was no longer an FPS, and that really kept me from playing it. As far as I remember (this was well over 15 years ago) the controls felt a bit clunky and counter-intuitive, and knowing that it was on the Quake 2 Engine I expected it to be a lot more Quake 2-like.
Because of this, I never actually completed the game. I may try it again, though.

I only ever played the Heretic 2 demo, I had fun with it though.

Let's not forget all the ones in Hexen 2.wildweasel wrote:And somehow there are 23 of them in Raven's Wolfenstein, implying either they've multiplied, or that 16 of them are Nazi forgeries.NeuralStunner wrote:I know I don't feel so bad about being frugal with Tomes any more, seeing as there's apparently only seven of them in existence.

It does? I thought Heretic 2 says he's been wandering between worlds for several years, which would include the two worlds Ep4 and 5 are on.NeuralStunner wrote:uncanonizing eps. 4 & 5, which weren't that impressive story-wise but still

Yeah, I think you're right. I could've sworn that Talky McFloatbook shows up right after Nyeh'Sparil kicks it. Undoubtedly some kind of mental trauma-blocking going on, as I've just attempted to rewatch a video of it, and had to give up after a few seconds.

could NOT get right into this. figured it was cos its not fps, as many you have said.
I did like the way the staff works though. the melee is very satisfying on the low tier enemies.
and that training chicken
LOL why do video games always beat up on the chickens... heretic, counterstrike, wolf3d ... oh no thats turkey on the plates

I had to look up the intro video to see what you meant and now I can't unhear that for Papyrus. faaaackNeuralStunner wrote:Nyeh'Sparil

Years ago, I had done a text review of Heretic II, as well as an in-depth, mission-by-mission review.
But I quite liked the video review linked to by the OP.
