Hero Quest wad for Hexen
Thanks to some wonderful help on the forum, I'm finally ready to release my map pack:
Hero Quest for Hexen
Is a near exact replica of the HeroQuest game by Milton Bradley. Navigate traps, find hidden treasure, and save the emperor's forces from certain destruction. See if you can defeat the maniacal Zargon's forces of chaos.
Features:
- Levels replicate original maps to scale. (Some with added details)
- Easy difficulty features exact monster placement
- Hidden treasures and hazards following the rules of the game. (I pulled cards form the treasure deck for each level to make sure it matched the board game)
- Sometimes find hazards, including wandering monsters, while searching for treasure.
- All traps recreated. (Some of the pit traps are not to scale, but serve the same purpose)
- Medium and hard have updated enemy placement to better fit an FPS
- Scripted bosses to match functionality from the manual
- Recreated (with some needed editing) every mission text.
This targets Zdoom. It is playable in vanilla hexen, but you will miss out on mission texts.
Download here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B53xwp ... nQ-MkvomeQ
And for those who want to make their own levels... Prefabs and blank map available here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B53xwp ... 8iXXOneBrw
Update 2/14/2014:
- Made spelling fixes in quest intro texts and win texts.

Pretty neat wad! I had a bit of fun playing through the first stage. Only problem was that the levels seemed a bit flat, maybe mix up the floor/ceiling heignts a bit?

That's by design. It's a scale reproduction of a board game, so I took very little liberties in the first few levels. After map03 it gets more detailed, although I decided to not mess with the height too much for worry of changing the design of the source maps. There's also quite a bit of door combat that seems like a glitch. This is also by design. In the board game, trapping monsters in doors to fight them one by one is the most common strategy to prevent being overrun.

Re: Hero Quest wad for Hexen
Oh my god it's Hero Quest. It's back in the form of a Doom wad!
I only played once back in the day, and I barely remember it..., some of the effect is unfortunately lost on me, but this is still a pretty neat idea, I like it. (It's also another excuse to dust off that Hexen iwad).
If I had played enough back in the day, to memorize the layouts, I'd be pointing at every little thing in absolute glee, though.
Makes me wonder if anyone else has done something like this, recreating a board game/tabletop RPG via Doom. It's an interesting concept.

Re: Hero Quest wad for Hexen
Not too long ago I was thinking that Hexen plus HeroQuest would be awesome. Gonna have to check this out, I loved playing it back in the day. Switching things up with a little more height variation and whatnot would be supercool but I understand if you're not willing to take quite so many liberties. So many mission packs to look forward to... You could even get some mileage out of the community using the general HeroQuest board layout and elements. With some liberties, of course.

I'll post my blank map and prefabs tomorrow for anyone to use as they wish.

Whoa! Awesome! I'll have to try to get my Heroquest obsessed friend and his drunken friend to play this. Shouldn't be a problem as long as we don't play Munchkin after (never play Munchkin with me when I'm sober and you're not).

Re: Hero Quest wad for Hexen
Updated OP with prefab and blank map download.
This reminds me of another reason why I didn't mess with the roof too much. Most of these prefabs are fairly complicated, and playing with height was always a pain. Most rooms with prefabs have a generic 128 height. Especially bookshelves and fireplaces, because they touch the ceiling. Altering their height would have made them look weird.
However, as the game moves on I made a lot more changes to mix things up. It's almost as if you enter into a boardgame that slowly gets altered by the world of an FPS that is spilling into it.

Re: Hero Quest wad for Hexen
In the text for "Prince Magnus' Gold", is the "emporer" (instead of "emperor") typo copied from the text in Hero Quest or should it be fixed?

Re: Hero Quest wad for Hexen
Definitely will be fixed. I typed out that word about 50 times in the entire text, plus retyping them several times due to various reasons. (like character limits). I tried to find every instance and make sure I didn't mess up, but totally missed one. Good eye, and thanks!Gez wrote:In the text for "Prince Magnus' Gold", is the "emporer" (instead of "emperor") typo copied from the text in Hero Quest or should it be fixed?
