Yes, I suppose "flat" might well describe them. They just need a bit more grittyness and texture to them. Like I said, they could well be the basis for something but, unless it is for a particular style of project, they would not sit well in Doom as they currently are. I don't think it would take too much to make them more usable though.

In short, they need better shading and texture

Here's a couple of texture sets I made by playing around with the GRAY textures. The first one has an unintentional Darkening E2 look to it:

Made a clean door. Not sure if a clean version has been made for this one before. I couldn't find one. But here it is:

Nice, but for some reason this simply looks too flat... almost like plastic and not like metal anymore :(

I made the Grey one much earlier, and we even got a Rave Door out of it!

But your version looks very nice, we totally needed that color to go with the others :p I like the lower holes.

The green one, now?

The problem with all of these is it's flatness. It doesn't look like metal, it looks like plastic.

Probably too intense stuff, but whatever.

Edit: DOOM Paletted on right.

Nice. I like the additional depth. Not all the colours are in the Doom palette though so GZDoom only I guess.

Aaaaand the compulsory recolours of Alice's one. :P

The ones towards the left might actually be useful but as you go further right they become less useful until they were really only done for amusement. If you thought Alice's looked plastic, look at these.

Hey, who knows, in future they might have plastic space doors. :P

Of course, making a grey one is easy when you have a good original to base it on.

I don't suppose you fancy doing one for the big doors and PLAT1 and perhaps even TEKBRON do you? It's beyond my skill to get them looking as good as your one.

I don't see why not, and it's within your skills, believe me. Since it's pure layer styles magic.

Edit: Hm, wasn't there a clean BIGDOOR2 texture somewhere? I do remember it being from the beta.

Anyways, here's a "clean" BIGDOOR1

And one with some extras.

@Blox - That's pretty nice, feels much better to me, even the contrast is a bit too strong

You should totally do all the textures. Imagine DooM 1 or DooM 2 with these.

The only complaint I have for the new door is that it looks too round. The contrast has been raised, and shadows added, to a point where it looks like the texture is round, like the sides of a can, rather than flat.

The bigdoor1 looks nice but I do see what was meant by the roundedness comment. It still looks good though.

I have a vague recollection of people talking about a clean bigdoor2 but I don't remember where it was or who was talking about it. The beta is a possibility.

[edit] I just had a look through the alphas and the beta and all the BIGDOOR2 (etc) textures are pretty grungy. The only clean looking texture is the platform one and it's pretty fugly. However, the basic BIGDOOR does seem to be there in the middle.
