[Heretic&Hexen] Baker's Legacy - Download on pages 1 and 19

Description
For some reason I am on a evil modding trip lately... the better it is ;) Yet another project but something that is very different from what is currently running, as it doesn't involve DECORATE, sprites for actors or weapon skills. In this case it's a simple texture project. And you might guess it: It is a Heretic Texture Pack inspired by Nightmare's genious texture edits for Doom (that's why it's called "Baker's Legacy" btw). The idea behind it is to create a texture pack for Heretic (not Hexen, not Doom, not Duke Nukem!) in the same style as Nick Baker created his texture packs for Doom: Edits, Patchworks, Copy'n'Paste, Recolors, Additions, all in the same style as the Heretic textures.

Why?
Quite simple answer: Because there is no good Heretic texture pack on the whole planet that extends the game's sets. And this sucks! In my eyes, good textures is a great source of inspiration and considering all the texture packs for Doom that have been used to base cool maps on, it is time to deliver something like this for Heretic, that will propably enlarge and even enhance the amount and quality of Heretic maps in the community. It's a great game and - repeating what I already said - it deserves more attention!

Rules
Without rules, this would only turn into a random texture-fest and that's what I do not want to have, so the rules are as follows for texture submissions:
  • Textures must be in PNG format (Heretic paletted)
  • Textures using custom palettes must at least look fine in software Heretic as well
  • Submit your textures between TX_ markers (no TEXTURES1 or PNAMES) as a wad or post them in this thread (use tinypic.com)
  • Textures must be Heretic style (no Witchhaven textures or shit like that, it must work with the game)
  • Get your inspiration from Nick "Nightmare" Baker's Doom texture packs (http://www.realm667.com > Texture Stock > Doom Style
  • Textures must use general engine sizes (e.g. 64x64, 128x128, 32x128, etc. you know what I mean)
  • Texture file names must be 8 characters
  • Texture names must be descriptive and reasonable so they get ordered correctly between the stock Heretic textures, makes mapping with them easier
So simply be creative, productive and let us produce something special and useful! :)
I will keep this thread open for a while until I get the feeling that the pack is large enough to be finalized and released, so it all depends on us. I will btw also do some submissions as I am a big fan of Heretic btw. So good luck and keep 'em coming! :)

What about [wiki]TEXTURES[/wiki] textures? They don't have the problems of TEXTURE1 (no need to fiddle with PNAMES) but they still allow to do multipatch textures -- which can be useful for texture packs like this...

Just added. Do TEXTURES entries have to be added between TX_START and TX_END or between PP_START and PP_END? Just out of curiosity, as it would be interesting how DB2 handles this then.

The TEXTURES lumps themselves are text lumps (outside of markers, like DECORATE). The graphics they use might be within patch markers, texture markers, or even sprite markers IIRC.

Doom Builder 2 should handle them correctly, but Slumped, XWE and DB1 don't.

I am aware of that, maybe my question wasn't clear enough. What I actually want to know: What happens if I have a texture between TX_ markers and also using this texture for another texture in TEXTURES1? Does this produce problems in ZDoom or DB2? ...Either way, I am really looking forward to first contributions :)

Well maybe you've already seen esselfortium and RottKing's MedivlTX pack, which is very good imho :)
( Atm the only valid link for this is : http://files.filefront.com/medivltxwad/ ... einfo.html )

But this is a good idea. The more quality textures mappers have, the more maps they produce :)
Keep it up.

I am working on Boatmurdered textures right now, but I dont want to release it before Boatmurdered. I was also thinking of making some rose garden textures just for fun. But I'm afraid that it will take some time before I will actualy make something.

Quite lots of stuff that could be incorporated. It's just up to essel if he wants to participate and contribute some of that stuff in the new format to this project ;) (TEXTURES lump or TX_ markers)

BTW, does anyone have the Heretic palette for Photoshop?

I don't know what's the format in Photoshop, but here's a GIMP palette. Maybe the format is compatible with Photoshop? It's a text file with a list of values.

As far as I know adobe's palette file format is a raw binary format... ie you should be able to extract the first 256*3 bytes of the playpal and use that, or you could use a palette created with the palette dump tool from DoomCrap -- it comes with heretic's palette as a png, so you can just load that up, save it as a palette and that should work with photoshop.

i just exported the playpal with xwe into an .act file. then when you "index" your colors you can choose that palette.

As of now, it's not a general-purpose one but a ZDoom/GZDoom compatible ports one, as it makes animated stuff and switches much easier to be handled. Everyone who still wants to use this can convert most of the stuff easily from ZDoom-style to any other base.
