What I would rather see is a 'I Wanna Be the Guy' style MOD for Doom instead of another Action Doom sequel (especially if it's one not made by the same guy who lead the creation of the original).

That'd be no good, people would just cheat to get past the levels they couldn't do out of frustration (I imagine you mean you want a stupidly difficult wad).

Each level end would give you an inventory item. The next level would check for it and warp you (From a 'selector' area) to the playable area. Now if you warp/changemap to other maps and you don't have the item.. Warp you to a insta-kill room. Yay. :P

And a GIVE ALL type inventory item that kills you if you want to circumvent the hack.

You can also force sv_cheats to 0 via mapinfo skill levels.

Exactly :(

I wish I could prevent the mapinfo lump from being edited/removed somehow.

Hmmm....... Does #include work with mapinfo?

Does it really matter if people cheat? What difference does it make? Why does it matter?

I know that if if I get to a point in a game that I can't do, or which I find frustrating and not fun, I can either cheat past it or stop playing. If I cheat past it then I get to enjoy the rest of the game. If I stop playing, that's it, "game over man". If, by some miracle, I persist and get past the particular point, I'm not filled with a sense of achievement but rather a sense of "that was farking shite". I have a sense of a potentially good game being spoiled, or at least tarnished, by a bad section and I am unlikely to replay because I can't be arsed with the pain of going through the bad bit again. Let me play games the way I want to play them on my computer please. If I "spoil" it for myself, that's my problem.

Very different with multiplayer or competitive ganes though.

If someone get's frustrated with your .wad, wants to cheat to alleviate that frustration, and finds that you've prevented them from doing so, what do you think's going to happen?

No, they're not going to carry on trying to succeed. They're going to exit the game and delete the .wad. Then there's a good chance they'll go on the 'net and start trashing you and your .wad.
