lumap01 Entryway to Hell - final version, bundled with mods for all official IWADs

"Look at you. Crawling out from under the rotting meat of your little friends. Did you think you were lucky?

You humans are so predictable. You came to this rock with your drills and your greed, entirely blind to what was sleeping beneath. You dug up the old temples, completely ignoring the quiet hum of warning in the stone. You saw my little pets and noticed the energy buzzing inside their tissue. So, you caged them. You drained them. You built your precious toys to destroy each other, all powered by the stolen life of this world. You built that towering monstrosity of a reactor to feed your colony. It was arrogant. It was loud. It called to a fleshy growth, to crawl in, to feast on the leaking power.

When I finally opened my eyes, I didn’t just destroy your kind. I played with you. I took your minds, and shattered your will. I made you mine, for my amusement. I called upon the demons of the temples to challenge you on this corrupt playground.

And now, look at this place. The corporate machines, the thriving flesh of the growth, and the blood-soaked altars of the temples. All existing in a beautiful, horrific balance. My balance.

And you? You're going to fight. I know you are. You’re going to rip the flesh from my monsters just to keep your tiny heart beating.

Go ahead. Tear through my complexes. Plunder the labs. Empty the shrines of the temples. Wake up the growth and steal its powers. Collect your prizes. Build yourself up into a god.

I'll be waiting at the end, watching your every step. Let's see how often you can keep me entertained."

Explore corrupted UAC facilities on easier difficulties or grind through hordes of monsters on Ultra-Violence and Nightmare.
This massive map with over 4000 monsters on UV and slightly more than 65000 SEGS features environmental puzzles and three super secrets. The first 5–10 minutes serve as a tutorial for a few new gameplay mechanics. If you get lost, easy difficulty features objective markers to guide your way.

I have created just around 10 sprites and removed one sound. The rest of the assets is vanilla.

lumap01 is my first map that I've ever published. I started working on it decades ago then abandoned it. Now with the help of modern tools I finally finished it. You can find the original map in MAP02 (originally lumap18.wad, from around 2008 or earlier, according to the time stamp of the file).

You can play the rest of the Doom 2 maps (and all other vanilla wads) with the modified weapons and monsters.

Doomworld forum post:
https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... for-co-op/

I'd say the map is complete and should properly work in most ports including KEX, Nugget, etc., but feedback for ZDoom based ports is welcome. Here are some topics where feedback would be helpful. Leave a note in these cases or other issues that you might encounter with this mod in a ZDoom port.
  • Some geometry renders perfectly fine in software renderers but can cause performance issues in UZDoom due to tessellation.
  • The map is optimized for co-op play in the KEX engine. To achieve this, I wrote a small profiler that counts all active thinkers to estimate how many changes must be transmitted and when the MTU limit will be reached. You can activate this profiler by renaming the lump MAPINFO_ to MAPINFO, though it will clutter the UI. Based on that data, I carefully adjusted monster placement, spawners, sound-blocking lines, etc. Please report any issues regarding co-op play in ZDoom ports, or other problems that might result from these adjustments.
  • This is a DeHackEd / DEHEXTRA-based mod, not ZScript. I tried to make it as compatible with ZDoom as possible, but minor behavioral differences remain. For example, monsters drop items immediately upon death in most ports, but in ZDoom, this only occurs when A_Fall is called. I have only tested this with a recent version of UZDoom and no other ZDoom-based ports.
Wad info:
Advanced engine needed: ID24/KEX, UZDOOM, Nugget Doom, Woof!, MBF21 compatible
Primary purpose: Single + coop play, deathmatch
Format: Doom 2 (MBF21) + DEHACKED with some DEHEXTRA
Gameplay: Slaughter, puzzles, exploration
You can play this with or without: Freelook, jumping, autoaim, passing below/above enemies. But it is balanced best without jumping.

The ZIP also contains mods for all official IWADs so that you can play them with the monsters and weapons from lumap01, but with tweaked balance and logic tailored for the original maps. I created these primarily for KEX multiplayer.

Just added some links:
Screenshots on imgbox because imgur is not available in the UK
Videos of a playthrough

I hope the BBCode will work soon. I am rather new here and a bit limited.

I'm surprised no one has commented on this yet. It's an extensive and quite innovative map. It's tough in places, but given that it's intended for coop play, that probably makes sense. It's obvious that a lot of work has gone into it.

I did find my frame rate dropping in several places just in normal play. It wasn't unusual to feel my game becoming choppy even in what seemed like relatively simple parts of the map.
Just by way of investigation, I used the massacre cheat to kill everything and my frame rate dropped to 0, only updating every few seconds and after over a minute of waiting, it hadn't recovered. Of course, that was the result of a cheat/test and should never occur in normal play.

Well, I'm new here. Maybe that's why.

Is it unplayable? I tested the map on different systems in UZDoom and other non-ZDoom ports and it worked for me. So maybe there is an issue that I don't know of yet. Can you post screenshots of the places with the worst frame rate?

Can confirm. That was probably due to the loot and the related light effects for armour and health bonuses that give off light. But I am not sure.
It's an extensive and quite innovative map. [..] It's obvious that a lot of work has gone into it.
Thanks. And yes, quite a lot. Also thanks to the size of the map there were a lot of small fixes that I had to make.

It's not unplayable. I just thought that it was worth noting that it does slow my machine down a bit. However, it's only into the "I can feel things have slowed a bit and are perceptibly less smooth than normal" rather than being truly problematic. The much smaller "The Old Map" (not surprisingly) runs absolutely fine.

Edit: BTW, I *think* that BBCode should be working for you now. I know that it's not showing up in your first post, but I can edit your post and get BBCode to work. Normally if a user doesn't have access to the codes, I can't do that. The problem might be that the codes are not formatted correctly. e.g. the YouTube codes should not have the full url, they should only have the bit following the "v=" part of the address. e.g.

Code: Select all

The imgur tags are similar IIRC, but I'm a bit rusty on them because I'm in the UK and can't see the result properly anyway without a VPN.

Thanks for the hint with the BBCode. Unfortunately I cannot use img tags (yet?) and imgur does not work in the UK. So I simply added a few images as attachments.

Yeah, there is a further restriction on img tags. Unfortunately, people were abusing the img tags and posting huge images that were causing problems.

If you check this thread, it might help: viewtopic.php?t=60595

Final version, for real now.
The ZIP now comes bundled with mods for all official IWADs so that you can play them with the weapons and monsters from lumap01 (with behaviour tweaked to better fit the original maps).

Just added a bit of story. Also this gives a few hints regarding the super secrets.
