Getting some bad frame loss on UZDoom and GZDoom
It's been a while since I last played Doom, maybe a month, and It's always run at nice frame rate for me. But I've noticed now that it stutters like hell, whether I'm playing a wad like Shadows of the Nightmare Realm or The Pink Valley, or a vanilla map. I was doing fine and got back to 60 fps after restarting the PC last night. However, and a stable frame rate initially when playing again today, the fps dipped down to the mid 20s. Spent almost two days looking for solutions. My fps had gotten better from resetting the PC, but would soon dip back to 35 or so and eventually be stuck at like 16. My PC specs for reference:
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-Core Processor 3.70 GHz
Installed RAM 24.0 GB
Graphics Card AMD Radeon RX 6800 (16 GB)
As said, I've always had good performance before I got back into old Doom the other night. I tried switching back and forth from Vulkan to OpenGL rendering, turning Vsync on and off... Can't figure out the issue.

Re: Getting some bad frame loss on UZDoom and GZDoom
My system is comparable to yours with the difference that my graphics adapter is a GeForce RTX 3060.
Both maps, mentioned above, and other maps run without issue, either GZDoom or UZDoom.
Although I will mention that The Pink Valley seems to be running with an exaggerated bobbing.
Your problem might be the AMD driver.
Has that driver been updated recently?

Re: Getting some bad frame loss on UZDoom and GZDoom
For the excessive bobbing in The Pink Valley, turning the head bobbing down helps.
My drivers should be updated after going through AMD Software. Stuck at around 30 fps playing through PV, maintained when going through levels, with hardware set to OpenGL. Would like to have back up at a smooth and stable 60
I'd recently upgraded my RAM from 8 gigs to 24, if that might be relevant.

Scratch that, now I'm dipping back down to 20 fps and below with UZDoom and GZDoom -_-

I'm not sure if this will be of any help for you .....
I have a file autoexec.cfg where I set my preferences, like
sv_cheats 1
vid_vsync 1
cl_capfps 0
vid_maxfps 200
vid_fps 1
these might apply to you as well. Give it a try.

Good lord, those autoexec.cfg settings set my frames to a crawl of less than 10 fps!
I've been running with Hakros Doom Launcher 1.7 for a long time and never had frame issues. It couldn't be the launcher causing these performance issues. could it? Or could I be dealing with a file or two being corrupted?

Not having an AMD card I don't know what the problem could be.
Maybe scale back to an older driver.

I'm grasping at straw here.
Is it possible that your ini file is corrupted?
You can find the location of the ini file if you type whereisini in the console.
Delete it and let the engine generate a new one when opened again.
However, if you go that route then this will reset any custom settings to defaults.

Hakros Doom Launcher was made by AI and is encrypted with untold horrors inside. It's entirely possible it has messed up your entire UZDoom configuration and I'd suggest clearing all of it and starting clean.Barbinglo wrote: ↑Sat May 30, 2026 1:52 pm Good lord, those autoexec.cfg settings set my frames to a crawl of less than 10 fps!

That's a shame. What Launcher would ya recommend then?

Re: Getting some bad frame loss on UZDoom and GZDoom
Think there's something up with Doom Launcher that was messing with my frames as well. It was fine for a bit as I was playing, but got worse as I ran through a few levels. To the point I was back down to less than 20 fps. I played on UZDoom for a bit without a launcher later, my gameplay was looking smooth.
I'll check out MTrop's Doomy and hope that launcher doesn't hinder my performance. I don't wanna go back to the primitive way of using mods, going through folders and dragging to the exe.
EDIT: I dunno what my deal is here. I played for like two minutes with Brutal Pack v10.4 on UZdoom, without any launcher, and my frames are fine. Then again on Doom Launcher, frames are fine through a minute of playing. WTF?

Re: Getting some bad frame loss on UZDoom and GZDoom
Still getting stuck at 35 fps, usually getting worse into 20s and less as I play. Got my hands on Lossless Scaling from Steam and it kinda helps, but sometimes not by a lot and I tend to get a lotta smears. I think the low GPU utilization is a factor. I've set Windows power settings to "AMD Ryzen High Performance", but I don't think it's helping.
