Inside the Void - GZDoom based custom map / mod [WIP] - DEMO OUT!

Post by Sonikkumania »

1st post here, hello everyone!

I have started this little Doom 2 IWAD, GZDoom based modification last year, and I'm glad to say that as of now, the 1st map demo has been so far completed!
The mod features custom textures, sound effects and .mp3 background music, plus few essential custom actors - However, the main focus of the mod relies on the mapset,
Doom monster behavior remains the same.

The mod has been tested on the following source ports:

GZDoom 4.14.1

UZDoom 4.14.3

LZDoom 4.14.3a

The level(s) feature slopes, so it is essential that the source port render mode has been enabled as "Doom Color" / "True Color" software rendering!
Here's the download link for my Google Drive:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-FZ_At ... oJ3BQ/view

The zip archive contains 3 files;
ITV.pk3 - The preferred way to play the mod, contains all major custom elements (sounds, music).

ITV_VanillaSound.pk3 - The more original approach, with original Doom .mus BGM and sfx - in case you'd find the custom assets irritating!

ITV.txt - the readme file.

So, all in all .. I really hope you guys enjoy playing through my level and don't find the custom assets too annoying!!
I'm eager for feedback as I'm planning new levels as writing this - I really appreciate your reviews!

Thanks. :)

P.S.

In case you might wanna try out my 2nd published Doom 2 mod,
it can be found here:

I really enjoyed that.

It doesn't push too many boundaries architecture-wise (and it doesn't have to), but it's well put together, flows well and it's still interesting and varied with a few nice innovations, traps, unexpected events and so on. I really like the relatively unconventional texture set that makes many areas bright and colourful rather than the heavy, oppressive Doom atmosphere that is often (understandably) present in many maps. That really put an individual stamp on this and some of the areas that made heavy use of textures with very much non-Doom colours were amongst my favourites. Having said that it didn't push too many boundaries, there were a few interesting "oooh, I've not seen that before" moments in terms of textures, enemies, architecture and... well pretty much everything really.

Generally, I'm not a fan of Serious Sam-like arena battles, but where your one was placed is fine and makes sense, and I really liked how the player has the opportunity to tour the battlefield before triggering things to see where the entry points, ammo stores etc are. So, by the time things kicked off, I had a fair idea what was likely to happen (without knowing the detail, of course) and was able to semi-plan for it.

I thought the additional/alternative sounds were a bit hit or miss. Some I really liked, but others didn't work for me. I note that you provided a vanilla sounds PK3 though.

Difficulty-wise, I played on medium and I thought it was about right for that setting. I died twice and finished with two enemies alive *somewhere* and 3 out of 5 secrets found (I didn't particularly go secret hunting). There were lots of things to do, plenty of bad guys to fight and a constant mid-range challenge without ever getting totally overwhelmed or feeling like things were unfair. Working through the map was nice and straight forward, but still interesting. I didn't have any "what am I meant to do now" or "what did that switch do" moments, and that's a big positive IMO.

A fun map that's visually unconventional in quite a unique and characteristic way. Definitely worth playing. Thank you.
