Site Downtime - 2025/12/01

Post by Rachael »

The site will be having some intermittent downtime later today in order to deploy a new configuration.

ETA to completion is not available right now, it depends on how much trouble it is to migrate all the relevant configuration to the new system being deployed.

More details will be given after the reconfiguration is complete.

The migration should now be fully completed, for both DRD Team and for ZDoom.org. The sites should now be protected by Anubis, and should be more permissive allowing older browsers to access the site (though, you will still not be able to with more ancient browsers, such as IE 6).

Some of the anti-bot directives that were originally implemented early on still exist, but the later stuff has been laxed quite considerably. There was some troubles setting this up, the configurations for both sites took a bit of work because they were never created with dual reverse-proxies in mind.

This is still a trial run, for now. Like any such solution, a single application will never be a "silver bullet" to completely solve all your problems, but we're hoping this will allow more people to access both websites, while still gating out the more aggressive bots that hammer both sites.

Thank you for the time and effort that you put into this. Fingers crossed that it will mean that the problems that many people have been having accessing the site will be resolved for the majority.

It sounds like it was quite a chore to get it done but, from my perspective, I didn't see any interruptions at all - and I am here a lot. ;)

I don't know if it's related to the changes or not but in the last few days I have had occasional "bad gateway" errors when visiting the forum. e.g. just now I was looking at a post that needed approval and when I pressed the approval button "bad gateway" appeared. I tried again and it was fine. It hasn't just been with moderator tools though. It can be any page. The vast majority of the time it's fine, and even when it does happen, pressing the back button and trying again fixes it, but I thought I'd mention it.

A minor frustration that has appeared since the new system: sometimes if I am typing a reply (maybe only if I'm using the quick replay box - not sure) and I have taken too long to type and hit "submit" or "Full Editor & Preview", when I do hit one of those buttons the forum will forget what I have typed and I will just be presented with a blank post entry box. It's happened several times now over the last little while. Pressing the back button can sometimes take me back to a page with my text on it, but sometimes that's just got an empty box too.

So, I don't know if it's possible to figure out why that's happening, but it would be nice if it could be addressed. This is on FireFox BTW.

I don't know if that is actually related to the new system or not, but nevertheless I've extended the session length to 5 hours as it was before, so it should give a little more time to type out and submit a reply. It was previously less than an hour.
