Contrary to popular belief, we are not all-knowing-all-seeing magical beings!

If you want help you're going to have to provide lots of info. Like what is your hardware, what is your operating system, what version of GZDoom/LZDoom/whatever you're using, what mods you're loading, how you're loading it, what you've already tried for fixing the problem, and anything else that is even remotely relevant to the problem.

We can't magically figure out what it is if you're going to be vague, and if we feel like you're just wasting our time with guessing games we will act like that's what you're really doing and won't help you.

Pixel Scaling / Aspect Ratio issue PSX DOOM CE 3.11.1.2 (and versions after 3.7.1)

Post by curryking3 »

I am having an issue only with PSX DOOM CE, for a few different versions of late, the last version I think which was working for me was 3.7.1

Since after 3.7.1, and including this version which is the latest 3.11.1.2, the issue is having a "squished" image

I know DOOM had longer vertical pixels that affected the aspect ratio of what is on screen, and the issue here being "squished" the game does seem 1/6th (from 120% vertical pixel) shorter than it should be

I attached picture comparison here also:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mDtVjQ ... drive_link
^older version, correct vertical scaling / aspect ratio, I think version 3.7.1

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sxSJpX ... drive_link
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YPm4kl ... drive_link
^newer versions and first two pictures are 3.11.1.2 version, with 1/6th shorter image (see pillars or walls for example)

I am not sure if it is related to the aspect ratio issues with GZDoom, the mod itself, or a mix of both, but I'm unable to find a setting to change to fix this

In the mod notes the author says the previously used aspectratio.pk3 is not needed, but in the previous mod versions when it is still used, the aspect ratio looks perfect for me, it's only in the newer versions where it does not work

What really confuses me though is seeing videos of the mod online they seem to have the normal aspect ratio with the correct vertical scaling

I've tried deleted the user files gzdoom.cfg multiple times, but it has not solved the issue unfortunately, I have tried for months if not much longer with newer versions of this mod with no solution and can't figure it out myself, and I asked a twice to the author at moddb, but unable to get a response or support from them, so thought I would ask here if there is a solution, cheers, any help is greatly appreciated

Really love the mod, it's honestly excellent, just the aspect ratio issue is really killing the experience for me 🥲

Okay, so I don't see anything strange in you config file (other than running gzdoom 4.14, the latest is 4.14.2). Loading it with my copy of psxdoomce everything works perfectly.

You say that you are using 3.11.1.2? The version I have (the latest afaik) is 3.11.1. Where are you getting the mod from?

One of the reasons I ask is that switching to your config, the mod proceeds to trigger the initial setup screen. This makes me wonder if we are using incompatible versions.

Also you mention a aspectratio.pk3. My copy does not include that file. What files are you loading?

For reference, these are what are loaded with my working copy:

Code: Select all

adding /app/share/games/doom/gzdoom.pk3, 692 lumps
adding /app/share/games/doom/game_support.pk3, 3308 lumps
adding /home/marcus/.local/share/games/doom/DOOM2.WAD, 2919 lumps

Thanks, I'm going to try to do it again

The version number 3.11.1.2 is directly from moddb, after I download it the .zip folder is named PSXDOOM.CE-3.11.1.2.zip and I extracted it to the same folder name, getting the mod directly from moddb, no modifications, just using the included gzdoom version, I can re-try with the latest gzdoom also

The aspectratio.pk3 was included with older versions of the mod, 3.7.1 and before I think, which did work for me (in the old 3.7.1 version and previously, not in the current or newer versions), I did not add it to my latest install attempts either or removed it if I added it (it didn't do anything anyway)

How do I see which of the .pk3 loaded like you showed there? I feel that is the issue, for some reason not everything is loading in maybe -- added a log.txt file, can't see anything wrong with it either, everything seems to load correctly for me also

What confuses me more though is every single computer I have tried this on (4 different PCs), the exact same issue happens, all fresh installs and deleted .ini files to make sure too, I can't tell if it's just some obscure bug or just not loading the right .pk3 for me

Edit - tried on the newest version of gzdoom also like you suggested, same issue, aspect ratio is exactly the same error, no idea, I can try on my Linux PC soon too

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rxAo5w ... drive_link
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1RA_tp6 ... drive_link
^Linux version, same issue, I just can't think of anything besides a bug in the mod itself at this point, Linux build is a complete fresh install, downloaded gzdoom from gzdoom website and was able to load psxdoom with all relevant files, same log when I checked in console too it loaded all the correct .pk3's

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uNQkmn ... drive_link
^and to show it's just the mod itself, this is my Linux gzdoom version also just running vanilla doom 2, zero problems with aspect ratio

Is there no function in gzdoom to alter vertical pixel ratio or size? That would be an easy solution to just be able to vertically stretch the pixels as a ratio as an option
