But sometimes, when I gib multiple enemies either all at once or in quick succession, it TANKS my framerate to one frame every few seconds until the clouds of blood dissipate.

For reference, my PC specs are:
  • Operating System: Windows 7
  • Motherboard: AMD 990FXA-UD3 R5
  • CPU: AMD FX-9590
  • GPU: AMD Radeon R9 Fury
  • RAM: 16GB DDR3
And I use Vulkan rendering.
I would suggest using Open GLES API instead. As far as I recall Open GLES is lighter in power than even Vulkan. Follow these instructions to get as bare bones as possible.
1 .Set your Video Options Resolution to Normal or Lowest Possible, Scale to 0.5
2. Turn off all texture filters and everything else under Texture options.
3. Under Hardware Render: Turn everything off in Post Processing
4. Dynamic Lights should be OK to run but turn OFF Shadowmaps
5. Turn Off Rendering Interpolation.
6. VSYNC should be OK to be ON

Thats about as bare bones as it gets while still having good resolution. From there see how smooth it is and start turning stuff back up slowly.

Basically you have about 2x to 3x more hardware than I got and I run this pretty well with other mods. The difference is that I am on a Linux Mint box., but for GZD that should not be a big deal. If you have further problems then you can also run this mod on LZDoom.

Doesn't AMD hardware perform like absolute garbage on OpenGL, though? Or is GLES something wildly different that makes it perform better?

Will do the rest tomorrow, though, next time I boot GZDoom.

I have a AMD RADEON Wrestler in my 2014 Gateway. Mine runs great on OpenGL, and OpenGLES. Mines a 64-bit mounted on 32-bit.

4gb DDR3
528 MB video RAM
Dual core with Hyperthreading @ 1.4 mhz per core.

Yeah, your rig blows mine out of the water by quite aways. HAHA.

Alright, I'll give this a shot this morning. Did all that Kalensar suggested, including dropping resolution to the lowest 16:9 preset I could find, scaling to 0.5, all that stuff. Even set to Open GL ES. Let's see what we get here...

EDIT: Threw the proverbial kitchen sink at it, and the blood clouds are STILL bringing my frames to a crawl. Maybe not quite as bad as before, but it still happens.

If I might be so bold, I'd suggest an option to use simple traditional XDeath sprites instead of having blood clouds. That would considerably reduce strain on system resources.

Gonna bring a little offtop here:
As I heard, recently there was some news about AMD and now its performance in Minecraft's OpenGL was increased in several times.

My R9 Fury GPU is still running driver version 21.5.2, which released last May. And it doesn't seem to have any new driver updates, so I guess I'm just kinda boned here.

Go to the driver download page on the AMD site, you might be able to get a more recent version with the web installer than the software says is available for your hardware, this has happened to me a couple times too.

Okay, I'm looking on the AMD website, and the driver software version they're showing for the R9 Fury on Win7 is a "Radeon Pro Software for Enterprise" with driver version 21.Q1.1. Should I get that?

EDIT: Wait, on another page about "Previous Drivers", I found an AMD Software Adrenalin Edition labeled 22.6.1. Would that be a better pick?

EDIT2: I'm going with the 22.6.1, since that released this June.

Alright, updating to the 22.6.1 driver didn't work. I figure I'll just post my ZDL load order now, see if that helps:
  • aim_assist_0.7.5.pk3
  • autoautosave-v1.4.2.pk3
  • mXhairs_2.1.pk3
  • precise-crosshair-v1.4.1.pk3
  • warm-reception-v0.3.1.pk3
  • mapsofchaos-ok.wad
  • NC_Crushers.pk3
  • BAC.pk3
  • MP-NB-SeriousSamTaunt.pk3
  • 3P Sound Pack.wad
  • legion-master.zip
  • RO.pk3
  • SkyboxesD2.wad
  • fluids.pk3
  • splash.pk3
  • Doom Metal Pack Vol 4 modified v3.wad
  • brightmaps.pk3
  • lights.pk3
  • FullBright.wad
I hope someone can tell me what might be causing my slowdown issues.

Yeah that could definitely be an issue you of you getting choked out! I was under the impression you were running LEGION alone. I'll put these into a better order format according to what I know , some of them I dont recognize but wont be too out of the order.

Okay, thanks. I'll try your order out and see what happens.

EDIT: Tried your load order, Kalensar, still the same slowdowns when groups of three or more enemies gib in close succession.

Must be. Chokes the hell out of my system regardless of graphics settings or load order, too.

I opened up the code and read the blood mist code Author wrote for it. Basically its its throwing out at max over 96+ particles all at the same time in a 360* array to create the blood mist.

Other than like me doing a direct edit or something, You can turn down your Particle scale to compensate for it is what I would try next.

96 or more particles, per gibbed enemy? No bloody wonder my computer's choking on that!
