OldBlood - NashGore for Potato PCs (ZDoom 2.8.1 & Zandronum)

Post by Nash »

OldBlood is a silly, fun thing I quickly put together while trying to pass some time before my new house is fully ready (I moved houses very recently, for those who don't know).

OldBlood is actually built to run on ZDoom 2.8.1 and (hopefully) Zandronum 3.1! It's basically modern NashGore for potato computers.

OldBlood will just as well run fine in the latest version of GZDoom (4.7.1 as of this writing). You don't NEED to use ancient source ports. As a testament to how clean OldBlood is coded - it runs 1:1 with the latest version of GZDoom with no errors or warnings. Had OldBlood been developed back in the day, with the same hindsight... that would've been something!

OldBlood applies some modern actor optimization concepts but targeting ancient versions of the engine. It should perform well. I don't know, though - I don't have a potato computer!

OldBlood is most likely very janky as I didn't spend too much time with it. I just thought it would be fun to go back to DECORATE after being so used to ZScript for many years. God, everything is more annoying to do in DECORATE...

What's the point of OldBlood? Maybe you can only run ZDoom 2.8.1. Maybe you're using GZDoom, but want to run through vanilla-style maps with a lightweight gore mod. Maybe you just like the look of the software renderer and sprite-based blood, as opposed to 3D blood. Maybe it's Maybelline...

I may or may not develop this further. In the mean time, have fun!

Note: for Zandronum, please choose EITHER Doom 1 or Doom 2, depending on which IWAD you want to play. Due to lack of filter folder support in Zandronum, I am forced to make 2 separate packages. Remember, CHOOSE ONE FILE ONLY!

I saw your video on twitter and I've gotta say that this looks so nice. I don't tend to use gore mods since it doesn't quite fit visually and I get tired of it after a few minutes. But this... these... are pixels. Hell yeah, gotta love ol' pixels! They fit so much better. The ammount is way too much in my opinion, though, but at the end of the day it's just that: my opinion.

Maybe a dumb question, btw, but would this look exactly the same in hardware rendering or does it exclusively needs software rendering to function? I'm still learning the practical differences between them.

I gave this a test, and it is pretty good, could use some work.

@RKD: It will look slightly different in the hardware renderer (due to having richer colors, no color banding, mouselook, etc) but it should still be playable just fine. This mod doesn't need software rendering. It's just that the assets were authored to look the intended way in software rendering.

I can look at toning the floor blood spots down.

Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's OldBlood - NashGore for Potato PCs (ZDoom 2.8.1 & Zandronum)

*EDIT
Actually, on the subject of floor blood spots, maybe consider a check for when blood lands on liquid textures? Not necessarily suggesting a blood fog effect for when it hits water or anything, just looks a little strange seeing solid blood sitting on top.

Oh, yeah, I meant to liquidize the textures, forgot about that.

Played for a few minutes, looks good! The only bug I found so far is that the blood stays in the air sometimes

Yeah, the blood staying in the air is the jank I was mentioning. :D I'll have to take a closer look at what's causing it, eventually...

Tested this in my 2009, Core 2 Duo iMac. Not a single spot of lag. I salute you for your work, Nash.

oh and btw I found a very weird issue with zandronum: for some reason when I'm using this mod I can't use the super shotgun, just like when you play doom 1, even with idkfa I get only the regular shotgun

Congrats on the release!

Is this meant to be compatible with weapon mods?

Unfortunately no. Since this is targeting ancient ZDoom before event handlers and all that fancy ZScript stuff, it's difficult to make these universally compatible

Fair enough, and even if you could that'd probably throw out the "potato compatibility" with whatever hackery one could come up with, lol.

You think compatibility patches could be possible though? Could other modders could make their specific mods compatible with this one in the future?

Wow, that's actually very impressive that it runs on such hardware. Thanks for testing, Weasel! :D

I suppose so, if anyone would like to make them. :) Truth is, I'm not sure how much time I'd like to put into this little mod, seeing as it started as a "shits and giggles" thing with barely any effort put into it. X)

Hmm, it may be that Zandronum doesn't have filter folder support. I'll have to check with the Zandro devs. EDIT: well, got my answer - Zandronum 3.1 doesn't support filter folders. Looks like I'm gonna have to work around it...
