Please, don't mind the discord screenshots, because i started making that tutorial there and it'd take a lot of time just to post all that again with proper explanations in my opinion.
I hope someone can find it useful.
And don't beat me please if something looks weird or unnatural - i tried to explain that for people, who never tried to learn shading or drawing but want to do spriting.Spoiler:Work with layers: custom blood splats and muzzle flash lighting on your gun
Doom skin palette in GIMP
1)insert the sprite you're working with
2)open "Colorize the image" tab and set "Hue: 25" and "Saturation: 25" - apply
3)open "Adjust Brightness & Contrast" tab and set "Brightness:20~25" and "Contrast:30~35" - apply
4)open "Adjust color balance" tab and boost Red to 30 and Yellow to -30 to get that orange-ey look
5)final step: copypaste to sheet with indexed colors that use original Doom palette
-find any image (preferably PNG as empty canvas, but SLADE will convert it into PNG anyway)
-translate it into Doom GFX via SLADE (colors must be 8-bit after that)
-export that image to your workspace (any folder) and then open via GIMP
-copypaste that orange-ey sprite into that image with indexed colors
-sprite will take closest colors to replace that orange tone from Doom palette and will use beige
Easy lighting from muzzle flash on your weapon:
1)Insert the sprite to your workspace on editor
2)Create new layer that uses similar colors to muzzle flash
3)erase unnecessary areas (the ones, where light from muzzle flash shouldn't be visible)
Same layers trickery can be done for custom blood splatters on your weapon/hand sprite:
1)Insert the sprite to your workspace on editor
2)Create new layer dark red tones
3)erase random areas via brush that emulates chalk traces (i use Acrylic02 in GIMP for such cases)
