VBLUD - minimalist blood mod

Post by Nash »

Map is Japanese Community Map Project MAP32 (jpcp.wad)

I was taken back to the days of DEHACKED where I modified the blood actor to leave behind a pool of blood. This is as simple as it gets. Use this mod if you want to add some extra gore to your vanilla playthrough but find NashGore too edgy even with the settings turned down. Recommended to use alongside NashDecals if you have decals enabled. Also try CBLOOD Ultimate Edition for green and blue blood that is universally compatible with other mods (does not replace actors).

Update 9th Feb 2022: if you want this mod to work with Chex Quest, you must add CBLOOD Ultimate Edition to your load order. There is no other way to make this work gracefully with current features.

Bonus: This mod is Zandronum compatible too.

Almost perfect!
Is there any way to make a pool of blood disappear in fluid flats?

I'll see what I can do. I think it's possible to detect liquid in DECORATE ... yeah for whatever reason I'm trying to keep this Zandro compatible.

(it would have been so trivial to do in ZScript, ugh...)

Pretty cool, but is it possible to add support for +BLOODSPLATTER?

Updated to v1.1, see first post.

Changes in v1.1.:

- Made the blood "disappear" in liquid flats - this still requires the flats actually be defined as liquid terrain (the kind that makes sprites cut at the bottom)
- Add support for +BLOODSPLATTER

Great addon Nash. I was looking for another blood mod, as Droplets can be a little performance intensive.
Say, you mentioned doing blood pools in dehacked. Do you mean that there's a way of making blood pools in PrBoom+, for example?
And, if so, how would one do that?

Yeah it would be done with Dehacked, and in theory it should be compatible even with the DOS versions of Doom (whether the engine can cope that amount of mobj spam or not, is a different story, heh).

Unfortunately it's been more than 10 years since I last used Dehacked so I don't remember the details anymore, but I think it's as simple as just assigning the next frame of the blood actor to a new frame.

Thanks for the speedy reply.
I see. I'm not much of a modder, unfortunately. I just edited some minor this in DECORATE and such for now. So, I don't think I'll be able to pull that off just yet.
If you ever find it, colour me interested.
And thank you anyway.

looks repetitive from the screenshots, maybe some randomisation of the sprites would help?

This simply uses existing art from the IWAD - there are no new sprites.

There IS some randomization as far as the sprite scale is concerned, but that's about it. I made it a point to not use any new assets for this mini-mod.

Hey. It actually looks pretty good in-game. I use it regularly and it's pretty cool. :)

v1.2
- Added RNG identifiers to all random number calls. Should help with netplay stability.

Oh, I like this. I'll have to give it a try. This looks like a nice middle ground for a blood mod that keeps more of a vanilla flavor (maybe flavor isn't the best word with blood). I guess I'll have to swap out my own quickie blood color mod for your CBlood though

Added a note about making this mod work with Chex Quest to the first post.

I have a question: "Which Source ports support this mod besides Zandronum and GZDOOM?"
