[RELEASE] Virtua Crisis: Guns of Light - v3: JUUUSTICE!!!!

My cool friends like light gun games. I know almost nothing about them and I wanted to impress them. True story.
So here's a lightweight little arcade-style mod for Ultimate Doom/Doom II.

There are four weapons total. You start with a pistol with infinite ammo, but you have to reload. You can upgrade this pistol with higher damage and clip size!
Knife is bound to Zoom and can be used with all weapons.
Ammo is more rare but finding a weapon pickups completely restock your ammo for that weapon.
Weapons are generally more powerful than Vanilla to compensate.
This is intended to create a very fast and loose gameplay experience!

I wonder how hard it'd be to add a collect-on-shoot function to the guns, just like in most lightgun games? In theory, it's possible with zscript--I couldn't tell you exactly how, though. You'd have to detect items, presumably with another linetrace, and then somehow simulate the player picking up the item.

That's a good suggestion! Maybe there's a simpler way with DECORATE. Say, replacing the weapon pickups with weapon crates that you shoot to break, and upon death it hurls the weapon at you, or teleports to you via A_RadiusGive? I'll give that a try.

Seems like a bit of a drastic change to gameplay, I'd like to make it an optional CVAR but that is beyond my current ZScript skill level.

Interesting concept, but this doesn't translate well to doom as is. In order to really sell this all the powerups would have to have a random chance of spawning - health, armor, weapons, ect. with a certain random factor to make it fairly rare, so that when you do get a gun or you do get that health, it makes it worth it, and make it shootable so you can collect it like in a light gun game.

Finally, the damages would need to be more adapted to make you feel like you're in a light gun game. as is, guns are a little weaker than you'd think, but you basically can never run out of ammo - which is bad for a light gun game.

But if you made all items spawns (no ammo of course) and make them random and more plentiful the stronger the monsters, and make guns do believable damage as if playing a light game, this can be awesome.

A huge new update has dropped, because I feel like it. Whole lotta stuff has been added or changed.

-Enemies now have a chance to drop health, weapons, ammo, or a bomb that can kill other enemies, or they may drop nothing. Larger enemies may drop better items.
-New difficulty settings!
-All weapons have received a slight damage boost.
-Weapon pickups give less ammo overall.
-New TITLEPIC and menu graphics!
-New title, interpic and readme screen music!
-New sprites for weapon crates and ammo pickups!
-New pickup sounds to tickle your brain with delight!

Would be hilarious/awesome if the playable character was literally Wild Dog from the first time crisis game, including his mugshot in the HUD.

Promising and cool concept! The Nuke in this mod works real nice and wondered how can i make the explosion without blasting myself to the air... It's my mod thing so here are some feedback to share:

- Pistol at the beginning can be reloaded while the mag is full and alerts enemies.

- It's interesting that weapons comes in a box. You have to shoot them open to get them but the box itself literally shoots weapon at the player. When you're moving, the weapons are guaranteed to fly off to the pit or hurtfloor.

- Anti Tank Rifle's primary rocket projectile has no splash damage for some reason.

- Lastly it's just my suggestion, but i kinda expected the voice "RELOAD!" from Lethal Enforcers, the another railshooter!

So yeah. This mod is cool!

I did a bit of looking around in the file, and I think you can sidestep the entire problem of yeeting the gun at the player by using A_GiveInventory:

Code: Select all

class ShotGunCrate : Actor
{
// ...
Death:
	  WPN1 A 0 A_FaceTarget;
	  WPN1 A 0 { target.A_GiveInventory("LightShotGun"); } // replaces A_SpawnItemEx("LightShotGun",0,0,32,20);
	  WPN1 A 0 A_NoBlocking;
	  WPN1 B -1;
	  Stop;
// ...
Since A_FaceTarget works, the 'target' pointer must be pointing at the player--which means you can call A_GiveInventory on the crate's 'target' to give items to the player. You may need to add a null check to make sure that 'target' exists, since it's technically possible that the player can die on the exact frame that they shoot a weaponbox, but this mostly avoids the problem of yeeting guns into pits.

Unfortunately, this *does* introduce a new problem: Monsters can shoot the boxes. There's a couple ways you can work around this; you could give the box immunity to all damage types, except for a special damage type that the player's guns do; you could have the box check if its target is a PlayerPawn, and if not, have it drop the weapon in place; you could also just say that this is a time crisis that the player will simply have to deal with by being quicker on the draw than their enemies.

The gun getting thrown at you is part of the feel, though. It's satisfying.

If someone were to make a mini-mod where the game knows where the exit is and takes you there by it's self and only stops when there are enemies to shoot, while another mini-mod let's you move the crosshair across the screen to aim and shoot, this would make Virtua Crisis even more satisfying.

So a few small things

1.It seems every time you switch to the Light Gun, you can reload even if you have a full clip

2. I think it would be nice to have a voice telling you to reload when you're empty and or firing with an empty clip, just like in actual light gun games

3. The RL sound is really weeny, maybe replace it with something punchier?
