[Release] The Dragonmaw

...A map? For heretic? From a guy, who has made three deathmatch maps so far?... A Singleplayer one!?! No ducking way! Yes, a map. And to add to the amusement, from a guy who specialises in making weapons.

It's my first real SP map, nothing like that I done before, I finally got myself to finish a one from beginning till the end. How the hell that happened? Quite simply - heretic suited my needs, and doom's textures and setting isn't particularly fitting for a castle carved in a volcano... or something. Not mentioning Icytux, who kept buggering me with his HPack map, which was a factor that kickstarted whole thing. (thanks for that, buddy!)

So! I am quite new to all this stuff, this is my first SP map for real (I never finished anything else, and the last time I was working on a map was like six months ago, and I don't do it too often). The build time is around 17 hours, in around week. I had insane creativity streak on this one, so I hopefully it looks and plays half as decent as I don't expect it to.

Me and my crew of guinea pi-... err, me and my testers, I mean, conducted several playthroughs in it, so I hope it plays right. I've put all my thought and effort to make it maybe not most pretty, best gameplay or flow-wise map, but I did my best to cover each of those aspects. I am still new to all of this stuff, heh.

Special props to Cage for titlepic!

NOTES:
- It's a vanilla format map, so it should work just right both on zdoom/gzdoom.
- Wondering from where the music is? Check Muzak.txt.

Pics or it didn't happen.
The map itself.

Summing up, hopefully you'll enjoy this piece of cr-... map of mine, somehow. :P

I just played through this, and holy cow was it fun! It was pretty large, but not sprawling, tough, but it wasn't tedious. I only died once, but that was because I'm dumb and shot a goo pod up close. It was large enough that I could dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge to my heart's desire, and it's for Heretic. I usually don't like to play Heretic maps, but this was quite enjoyable.

All in all, it was very fun, but way too short, despite being an enormous level. The exit felt a little odd, and I wasn't expecting that to be the end of the level. It just felt underwhelming, compared to the vastness of the level, for the exit to be a little room next to some stairs.
Anyway, great job on this, I really hope you make more of these.

Yeah, Heretic is not mine cup of tea either, but some people said that it needs some love... so I gaved it a try. :P

I could go figure that the ending was kinda dissapointing, compared to other areas - if I will have time, maybe I will fix that. Oh, and it's quite short, because I don't have as much patience as I'd want to make it longer. By the way, the map was way harder earlier, so I'm not sure if I didn't make it too easy now, thus a bit shorter.

Map design is solid, but the gameplay is not standard Heretic fare. There is way too much ammo (which made the map very easy even on "Smite Meister" difficulty) and only a few powerups (other than Tomes, that is). In "modern" Heretic maps, clever use of powerups is used (and even essential) to conserve ammo - turn Rattlesnakes into chickens, kill groups of Gargoyles with Time Bombs, kill Maulotaurs with gauntlets while invulnerable etc.

Oh, and I loved your music choice, it really brought memories.
