[Sigil] Romero's fifth Doom episode released

Post by drfrag »

He announced it yesterday, it will come out on february and it's named Sigil. It's exciting and great news but also could be dissapointing if the maps don't meet the expectations. 9 SP maps of course plus 9 DM maps.
There's a teaser video and it seems recorded with GZDoom but i'm not sure, he streamed a gameplay session and looks like he's not very good at Doom anymore.
It's for limit removing ports, that means Crispy and even RUDE (it's the closest to vanilla) if you don't mind the graphic problems. It won't be playable on a 486 but i still have a couple of DX-33s lying around.
Surprising no one has commented this here yet, there's a thread at Doomworld of course.

This is the main stream, for now: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/347256967

Twitch will likely delete that in two weeks. Hopefully he pushes it to Youtube before that happens.

Just want to clarify that on the Twitch Stream he did yesterday, that the full 5th Episode is titled Sigil Of The Baphomet along with the game only having 9 levels included in the release - as stated on his webpage:
Q: You mentioned that there’s nine levels in this megawad, as well as nine deathmatch-only levels. Are there eighteen levels in the megawad?

A: Actually, there are only nine distinct level wad files. It turns out that you can put both the single- player and the deathmatch levels in the same wad. If you run the wad in deathmatch mode, you spawn in the deathmatch area of the level. If you play Sigil in cooperative mode, you start in the single-player part of the level. This support has been in DOOM® since the beginning.

That deathmatch arena is most notably found in Plutonia's Map 30.

Now there's an interview at the Sigil page, it's for GZDoom but i guess they are actually limit removing maps.
Romero wrote: The free version of the SIGIL wad contains several wads that deliver the levels. In the SIGIL fan boxes, we also include Buckethead’s amazing music. To make it work, you basically drag the SIGIL.WAD file onto gzdoom.exe (or gzdoom.app on a Mac). Sigil’s numbering scheme is E5Mx where “x” is the level number 1-9. Episode Five, just after Episode Four: Thy Flesh Consumed. To play SIGIL, you must have the registered DOOM.WAD as well.

John confirmed on stream that he will test on other ports to make sure it works i.e. Crispy, PrBoom+, Legacy, etc. So I doubt that the E5MX naming scheme will stay. GZDoom just seems to be his personal favorite port.

Someone should fork PrBoom+ with some type of basic MAPINFO support...

At least his personal favorite changed from Doomsday.... thank goodness

Though still having that each-map-separate-wad mindset holdover from the Doom dev days is a curious habit to retain.

I already did, the result was UMAPINFO, the interest to maintain it by other people was basically zero so that thing now rots away in its Github repo. I'm sorry, but I cannot maintain two ports.

I suspect this time is not a joke.
I actually like BD but not for this, i'd rather play on any of my 486s but that's not possible.

I can't wait to play some maps that I haven't played yet (and (as such) I do not know how they will play or what the author-intended experience will be like), with a mod that will completely alter my experience.
