[CLOSED] Spriter for Hire [original actors w/ rotations]

Postby Nash » Sun Dec 29, 2019 1:11 pm

Commissions currently closed as I am involved in some other urgent projects. I will only be finishing up already-in-progress works, but will not be accepting new ones. Thanks to everyone who gave me the opportunity to realize your projects!

Original post kept for historical purposes. Will update whenever I re-open commissions:

Hello, I'm Nash Muhandes and I am accepting commissions for Actors (monsters, NPCs, player sprites; any moving actor in the world) with full sprite sets (either mirrored rotation or full rotation). Gritty art style is my main forte, but I am able to produce stylized art too (cartoony, retro, hand-drawn-style pixels) at your request. While I am more experienced with organic or humanoid actors - I am confident in doing automatons/robots too, if given the opportunity.

I only do original concepts and designs - absolutely no frankenspriting (and definitely NO spritesourcing from commercial/known resources).

My rate starts at a base of [price to be revised while commissions are closed] which may vary (either higher or even lower) depending on your specific requests... typically more sprites/states/frames would increase the rate, and vice versa in the other direction.

The base sprite order will get you standard Doom-style states: Spawn, See, Melee, Missile, Pain, Death, XDeath.

I mainly accept Paypal, but am open to other payment methods upon request.

"lmaoooo why should i pay you, i can get sprites for free"

Well here are some reasons why you'd want to hire me:

1 - Completely original art and actor design custom made for YOUR project. No frankensprites, no copyrighted artwork. The sprites will be yours upon delivery; do whatever you want with them!
2 - FAST turnaround time. Upon your order confirmation, you will have a first draft/rough preview within 2 - 5 hours, and the complete sprite set (all rotations and states) within 10 days to 2 weeks (depending on how complex the art is, and provided no unavoidable real-life distractions happen). Due to the increase in workload, these aren't as fast as I started anymore. Will update this more accurately when I re-open my commission slots.
3 - I am very experienced with creating art for the Doom engine in particular and know how to handle Doom-specific renderer quirks (the weird Doom aspect ratio for example). What this means is that your sprites are guaranteed to look good in-game.
4 - If you are working on a TC or standalone game and want unique, never-seen-before visuals, I'm your guy.

Feel free to hit me up on the ZDoom Discord (just @ me in #general or #assets) or tweet me at @NashMuhandes and we can talk about your projects. :)

Have a selection of my work below:

[OCTOBER 2020]

[OLD STUFF DECEMBER 2019]
Spoiler:

Final note: I reserve the right to decline a commission for any logical reason that makes sense - for example, if I am at full workload capacity and cannot take another, or if I have busy IRL schedule, or if the project is offensive, etc etc etc...

I can vouch for Nash, from what I have seen so far, when he starts on something he's very quick to finish and all-while I can't absolutely guarantee Nash will always start right away it's usually all done over the course of 2-3 days. I was very satisfied with my first experience commissioning Nash to create the Frachtur sprites for EBlitz, which look fantastic by the way and I am looking forward to working with him again in the future.

Its Nash. Anyone who follows the Doom/ZDoom scene knows he is one of the greats.

Ill see if i can get this written up somewhere for more exposure. Because its Nash. And that should say everything to you by default.

Very good ! Only quality stuff came out from you. I hope this will help you out with your stand alone project.

Out of curiosity, would you do the same with coding or scripting ?

As someone who recently commissioned Nash to make some sprites for my TC (the rat), I can vouch for him as a highly recommended sprite artist.

and this is coming from someone who does the same thing.

Thank you for the kind words everyone! <3

Well I don't think I am that good with scripting (there are many other far capable ZScript/programming wizards around the boards :D) but I suppose I can be hired to develop custom solutions/systems unique to your project. For example, RPG systems, menus, things like that. That's about the extent of my scripting capabilities. Don't take this as a "Yes" though, it would most likely have to be analyzed on a case-by-case basis before I can say whether I can commit to it or not. Lastly, due to lack of available free time, I cannot do one-on-one scripting lessons or offer any personalized help with anyones' scripting problems, sorry!

Sorry I never got around to finishing that rat. Though, no offense, I'm not sure I like nash's very much. It really just looks like he 3d modeled the rat, and slapped the face I made on it. Not really to my taste. The dog isn't bad though.

Glad I found this topic. I might be contacting you via Discord in the future about a player sprite set, Nash. It's one of the last major things I really need to get made to replace a group of basic placeholder sprites. I need to make sure I got enough $ scournged up first, and I need to get references beforehand though. V:

@Ringman: I understand, and I agree with you actually. I might go over it, do an update pass to make it blend better with your original (and excellent) hand-style art.

@Lord Misfit: I'd be happy to! Feel free to contact me whenever you are ready.

Here's what I had started on for the partial view. It has problems though, and needs serious cleanup, but this was just the rough for the animation. Nothing stopped me from finishing it, but myself, but you know how it goes.

EDIT: I have talked to Nash and the issue has been resolved. I have received a full refund despite only asking for half, given that the full spritesheet was delivered on time. I do appreciate the gesture. What happens in the future with other people is up to Nash. Do not base your decisions entirely on the single experience described in the rest of the post, as it may not be 100% accurate due to possible misunderstandings, but do keep it in mind.

Original post:
I wasn't sure whether or not to make this post, but I'm afraid I should.

Back in April/May I commissioned Nash to make a double-resolution mugshot. I received the files sometime in late June. So far so good. However, there were some issues with the graphics such as some frames looking off in-game due to the hair being obviously copy-pasted and scaled up (bilinear filter gave it away) or other frames not being as good as I had hoped for, but thankfully had only fairly minor issues. I reported all of those issues and did get feedback from Nash stating that he'll take care of them eventually and that he had something else going on. It's October now. The fixes never came. I am glad that a friend of mine volunteered to fix them because I had not used that mugshot for months due to those issues.

All in all, I paid $120 for this. After discussing this with friends, I've slowly come to realize that I got stiffed hard, given the quality of the end result and mainly the fact that Nash bailed on me. Pretty much all of them had one thing to say: "bro you got ripped off." [Statement removed on the basis that it's hearsay and cannot be confirmed by me with 100% certainty.]

Would I commission Nash again? No. Would I recommend him? Inclined to say no, unless he changes his ways and maybe adjusts his pricing a little. Don't get me wrong, I don't think everything should be dirt cheap, but the quality, in my personal opinion, is not worth the $75 base price. There are other artists in this community who'd do a much better job for the price that I paid. I just wish I knew them at the time.

As for why I'm posting this now (and at all) instead of back then, two reasons: A) out of courtesy because I've known Nash for a while and B) I was hoping I'd get the fixes delivered eventually. I now believe turning a blind eye to all this would only enable such behaviour in the future.

However dissatisfied you may be with the product, I kinda feel like a public call-out of this sort is kind of uncool, even if you did go back and add an "edit" to the top of it. While I don't necessarily disagree with the overall "let the buyer beware" message, this strikes me as the kind of thing one would do only after all other options have been exhausted and the matter can no longer be resolved privately.
