Beneath The Oaks [Beta! Halloween Surprise!]

Post by Batandy »

Happy Halloween everyone! This is a mod i've been making for a month that i was planning to complete for the end of October, but real life stuff got in my way and i failed to
meet my expectations. But i still wanted to give you a treat, 'cause Halloween's about that right? tricks and treats.
So here i am, releasing my current work so you can get a taste of what i'm making, it's a story driven mod with a mysterious athmosphere and wonderful scenarios.
The gameplay is slow paced, think of it like an Amnesia game, but it also has its action moments.
I'm planning big things for the next chapters, i hope you'll enjoy what i've released so far.

Story:
31 October, midnight. You awake in a hospital, no one's around and you don't remember anything. Why are you here? What's happening? All you know is that you got
to follow a trail of baloons, until you find yourself lost in a forest...

In this version, the prologue and the first chapter are playable.
I'm planning to make 5 or more chapters with different quests and mechanics per chapter.
It's a side project so the development will be a bit slow (I have to work on Golden Souls 2 :P), but i'll do my best to upload the complete experience as soon as possible.

You are crazy, man :) I just tested it for a few minutes as I am just about to leave my home now but it is defeinitely interesting. Cool atmosphere and look but it gets a bit destroyed by the remaining Doom stuff (hud, menue graphics), other than that it feels like a totally different game :)

that was fun
getting kind of a "over the garden wall" feel. don't know why though
but there is no release that can escape without nitpicks:
you can crouch-jump through the solid window into the security-or-whatever room in the hospital
the axe could maybe use a "hold to ready, release to swing mechanic"
and searching for the wood is a bit of slog. if you miss one stump, you gotta backtrack and re-backtrack for it
and i think the enemies don't seem to bleed, yet leave blood decals on walls when hit

Heh, thanks, yeah you're right about the hud and such, i've sorta rushed this thing to get something playable for halloween and i didn't have the time to modify that stuff (i blame the university! :) )

Thanks for the report, i'll fix every issue. About the wood, i did place a couple of extra tree trunks around, so even if you miss some you can always get a piece of wood from another trunk.

Also you totally nailed it, Over the garden wall was one of my main inspirations!

lotta remnants of your old dante's inferno wad (to which i do hope gets reinvigorated again some day!)

very good, its unsettling but more surreal and abstract than typical horror stuff!

I would reduce the number of firewood chunks you have to retrieve to 10, maybe vary it for skill levels - 10 for medium and below, 15 for hard, 20 for very hard? And perhaps reduce how much damage those nightmares can cause? Not by much, but it seems like you can be dead in two hits.

I don't know whether you plan to integrate money as a mechanic in this mod, but it'd be nice to have that on the display somewhere.

That's it for my critiques, I like where this is heading. :)

I just played the beta today... I really like it, I like that you decided to create an atmosphere instead of going for a jumpscare mod like others do, my only suggestion would be that you make the health pickups a little bit more obvious since I had a little bit of a trouble trying to find them when I got hurt, but other than that this is a good experience, can't wait to play the other chapters...
