just one thought:

Having the player explore the map sometimes, is good. But be careful not to make a map so large and interconnected that the player gets lost. Wandering around without any idea on what to do is really bad.

Does anyone have any experience with Shattered Steel ? It's a mecha game by Bioware and it has great cockpit graphics and weaponry. This looks great - I'm going to echo this post. It looks from the screenshots that the interiors are static graphics with overlays, and I could use some of those ...

i usually go for GZDoom, but i've been also playing with PrBoom+. i find it to be a nice source port, specially when used as a replacement for Doom95.
