That framerate death is almost certainly due to the presence of one or more Nightmare Elementals on the map. you can't consume plasma pistols for ammo because they're assemblies. assembled weapons can't be converted to ammo.

the HPNBFG doesn't really need anything special once you get it working; the fact that you have a High Power Nuclear BFG 9000 is pretty sweet in itself.

You also need the Anti-Materiel Rifle (made from battle rifle) and the Energysaw (made from chainsaw; it's been split off from Plasma Infusion and has its own recipe now)

It just looks for the presence of a certain actor native to hdoom, and runs a script if it's found. I believe the brutal detection stuff works in a similar fashion.
The only thing that "c-doom.pk3" does is add a dummy actor with the name of the one being looked for.

I think IHKs are fine if they're avoidable. The Cyberdemon is pretty much a 1-hit killer, but the rockets are easily avoidable. So long as the attacks are fair, I say it's fine. Plus, having wielded a rocket launcher ourselves (and possibly blown ourselves up with splash damage) by the time we ...
