I don't get it. The lump filtering in the files has already been updated to the new syntax back in 2022:

It works fine on my side. Using latest GZDoom v4.14.0 (dev snapshot, even). I cannot see any change in lump filter syntax.

Even though masterlevels.wad was changed in the lastest port update, neither the skies nor the M_DOOM patch were touched. Therefore, this patch still has reasons to exist.

Anything that adds more sprites won't work (even if it's the same kind), which is what these smoothing projects usually do.
