Does anyone know why this happens in software mode sometimes, but not hardware mode? First a midtexture that intersects with a sloping ceiling. DeHacked - sound 99 plays fireball sound instead

Sound 99 (DSMANATK) when set as the Alert/Attack/Active sound in DeHacked, plays the imp fireball sound effect instead.
However it works as expected in PrBoom+

What's going on here?

See attached wad for example. For UltimateDoom, E1M1.
