If you're referring to the download itself...I hope Sourceforge fixes its stuff.
If the program downloads correctly, well, it would be rather helpful to get the version you're downloading and the OS you're using, considering what you seem to describe, a picture would be useful.

I mistakenly uploaded a package with the wrong zde.pk3 for the fixed beta, it has been updated with the proper one, along with the stand-alone zde.pk3 in the ZDE download repository, this new zde.pk3 includes the newest versions of The Adventures of Square.

I just uploaded a new beta for the old series that fixes a nasty segmentation violation when identifying PK3 files. No new versions are included in zde.pk3, it was just a quick, dirty fix.

The flashlight "thingie" is a browse button...check the hover hints.
As for External programs, those are programs to be ran before starting ZDoom itself, like external MIDI synths and such. Check the manual.

AFAIK Sourceforge no longer does that. I've downloaded some of my own stuff (and a lot from others) from there and never had that problem. User interfaces are a matter of taste: some people love the Windows 10 stuff, I find it bland, hideous, blinding and clunky, same with the latest OS X design ...

Yes, it can parse pk3 and detect it, that's a good idea, thanks :) Sooo...work is underway for version 2 of ZDE, it will incorporate some of the stuff discussed before and support for some stuff mentioned above. I use GZDoom as well, but haven't been aware of recent developments :P, of course GZDoom's IWAD support matters, since it's the one in active development :) I've been aware ZDoom has been discontinued for a while, as you point out, but I didn't really think support for new game IWADs would be added ...
