Re: Texture filtering default discussion
If I'm being honest, it really feels like the sheer amount of fervor over the default setting is born from an anti-Graf sentiment. Nah it's because the setting is wrong for the art, this has been well explained. It became an obvious point of the problem with Graf, but if Graf had just changed the ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
Do you remember when Game Theorists posted that incredibly absurd video about Doom "not being 3D" based off a bunch of stuff they made up that was easily contradicted with... like any amount of research? Do you then remember when even Digital Foundry started quoting that video as through it was fact ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
But it is just about art, that's all we have been talking about is art, that was the whole thing the texture filtering is art. Trying to change the subject into something that isn't about art is, well, changing the subject and is not what is being discussed. Maybe that's why you're confused about ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
Nah I'm pretty sure it's because they are two entirely different things. I'm actually honestly baffled that you somehow don't see them as two objectively different things, given the very blatant results. It makes me think you aren't actually talking about the thing I'm talking about, but then I don ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
The original Doom had a 320x200 resolution. Yet all DSDA Doom, Woof, D+D2, Crispy start with higher resolutions by default. They also fix original Doom's texture rendering errors. So the argument to respect the default originals is a bit selective. No it isn't they are two entirely different things ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
Is this really a conversation about the default texture filtering anymore? Seems this isn't staying focused.

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
If you're that concerned with how it was meant to look, why are you using the hardware renderer at all, rather than the software renderer that's still there and looks much closer to how it originally did? That's kind of always been a point of confusion for me with these "how it was meant to be ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
Again, people confuse VGA monitors and TVs all the time, but they produce very different picture quality. You also haven't responded to the rest of my message about what you're arguing for isn't even the same thing. You are arguing for screenspace filtering which is what a CRT would (hypothetically ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
That doesn't reflect my experience at all, and certainly never saw anyone with the same problem. Sorry but I cannot possibly agree with your perspective. It just sounds like you had broken monitors to me. Also if your argument is "we should have texture filtering because CRTs", then that's even more ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
In 1993, doom was on screen at 320 pixels x 200 on a CRT monitor where you really didn't have to look hard to see the individual coloured dots on the screen making up the pixels of the image - and the gaps between them. As a result, the image was generally dimmer and less well defined by default ...

Re: Texture filtering default discussion
People said it already in many different words but I want to say it this way: when it comes to default settings, you can't win. Biggest argument against texture filtering is "it wasn't the default in 1993!" You can sure argue that but the fact remains that one person's preference was all it took to ...

Re: Obligatory Legacy of Rust/ Nightdive Doom Port thread
Hello, I'm trying to extract music from the remaster to use it in gzdoom. I managed for D1 and D2 but I can't find the remixed tracks for both parts of Final Doom. Anyone knows where they are ? You are quite confused, Final Doom doesn't have a remixed soundtrack. Plutonia is just reusing tracks out ...

Re: HeXen update
I was adjacent to it but not personally involved, I was working on Quake2 and then Doom+DoomII at the time, and it didn't have multiplayer.
Though indeed it was different as Lucasfilm were providing guidelines for art and lore, amongst others. Even the achievement names.

Re: HeXen update
It rather depends, for something like Quake 1 & 2 everything we did went through approvals by Kevin Cloud, given he was the director. For Doom, Heretic and Hexen we basically proposed our expectations for the project to id Software ahead of time, but the technical aspects of how to implement them ...
