OK, done that. Actually, one of the first things I noticed about Hexen in ZDoom was the seemingly increased reliability of the Arc. As far as i can tell it seems just as "sticky" as it should be. (In both, the arc will dissipate if it forces the enemy into a wall and hits that wall itself.)

The projectile is allowed to hurt the shooter by explosion and no monster in Hexen is excluded from radius damage so if it explodes near the Heresiarch while he is vulnerable it should hurt him. It's a very rare occurence though because it needs the Heresiarch to shoot while vulnerable and hit an obstacle directly next to him. I had to wait for 5 minutes until this happened once.
I turned on god mode (both versions) and started "hugging" the Heresiarch and thus taking the orbs at direct range and catching him in the blast too.

When his shield is not on, unmistakable pain sounds, eventually he so damaged himself that he started summoning Bishops.

Wraithverge spirits appear just as (or more) aggressive in ZDoom. In both versions, spirits were passing over the pillar in Winnowing Hall that hides the Emerald Key.
