La Base Maldita (The Cursed Base) [p.1 for info and dload]

Post by Karnizero »

SCROLL DOWN IN THIS POST FOR DETAILED INFO.

My last map, now finished, for GzDoom.

Uses lots of 3D Floors, Slopes, lots Dynamics Lights, New Music, new ambience sounds, etc, etc, etc...

All Readme File is in Spanish, but nothing really important.

The only thing you must to know to play correctly this map is some previous configurations:

When you start map01, you should set "Sector Lightning Mode" to "Legacy", and then, adjust the Brightness, Gamma and Contrast so you dont see the tree at the end of the dark corridor, but you are able to see the pixels of the floor and ceiling.

Then adjust the sound so you hear a far noise. Set the music volume to the same value.
The Sound Sample Rate, should be 65535.

When you finish, press "Use" to start playing.

That is all, just play and no more. You dont need to read more Spanish all over the map (only at the last intermission).

I hope you all enjoy it :D

Version 1.0:
- Version 1.0 uploaded to Rapidshare and Megaupload.

Version 1.1:
- One bug have been found and solved. A pair of monsters were getting stuck somewhere in the map, while playing "Ultraviolence". The Flags of those monsters where not correct. That error is now solved.
- At time of writing this lines, this new version is being uploaded, and posted the apropiated link.

TODO LIST:

- A translated version (english) of the readme file, and a file containing the last intermission text.

I only had a chance for a quick run through which I appreciate is not the best way to view a mod. So this is really only a first impression:

The Good: :)
Very atmospheric.
Music and sounds very well used, enhancing the atmosphere still further.
Interesting and good use of slopes, 3D floors and dynamic lights.

The not so good: :(
Some areas were quite plain looking. If they hadn't been disguised by slopes, 3D floors and dynamic lights I think they would have looked very basic.
I did find myself wandering around aimlessly quite a bit - possibly because I wasn't playing that seriously.
A scripted battle with spawning monsters that simply went on for too long and wasn't very exciting.

I hope to get a chance to play it properly later on.

Also, there seem to be a *lot* of resources in the WAD. Are they really all used or could you trim the file size down a bit?

All resources in the main wad are being used.
The textures wad (text_wad.wad) have lots of Q2 textures, much of them used, but some others not used, but the most bigger are the sounds and music files, all of them in MP3 or OGG format, and ambience sounds in WAV format.

I know some areas seem a bit "empty", but i was out of ideas to fill those.

But dont worry, i will start a new map, a secuel of this one, with better looking though, and maybe much more decorate from scratch.

Check your sound settings.
Sound Sample rate at 65.535, and try to test your settings at the first test map (map01). You should hear a far distanced noise.

All ambience sounds are wav format, but there is no ambience sounds all over the map, only at certain places.

OK, played it through properly. It was pretty good fun. My earlier comments stand. It is a very atmospheric wad with some very nice areas. I thought the QuakeII-like corridors with sloping walls looked good and the lighting in there was nice. Gameplay was generally quite fun. The map looks pretty enough on the whole but there are quite a few areas that are very plain. One example area is the SHAWN rooms in the middle of the lava lake.

However, the biggest killer for me is the scripted battle with waves of monsters porting in. It just goes on for too long and is a bit dull IMO. I actually wanted to play the map again just now and, after firing up the WAD, I remembered the battle and thought "I can't be bothered with that again". So, for me, that battle has killed the replay value of the map.

There is one puzzle that had me stumped.
Spoiler:
edit: Nevermind, I got it. Not the most obvious puzzle though. :P

I can't acces internet from my home, so thanks for submitting those screenshots. :D

For those who played and finished the map, i am going to start the sequel, in a GzDoom version and ZDoom.

I will valorate very much your oppinions: what did you enjoyed, and what things will you change, so i will make a better map for the sequel.

i am thinking about making an english and spanish version of that, but that is only a "secondary" idea.

Thanks.

Hey i have a problem with the mod. When i play it, a lot of textures simply don´t load and the game only shows a chess- like frame on objects and walls. ¿what is happening?
I´m using GZDOOM 1.8.02 with the wad.

I would gladly help if it wasn't for the fact that the download links are down. Also try updating GZDoom to 1.8.4
