SVN Repo?

Post by Xenaero »

Since I just recently saw a ton of bug fix threads, I was thinkig that it might be a good idea to set up a SVN so people can quickly get those fixes without waiting for the next version and/or downloading a new .cab. Downside to this is, it'll probably need to be compiled by the end user.

It might give users an oppourtunity to test new features, and put in bug reports as they come in. Just a suggestion. :)

Do you have an SVN server available? I don't.

If your hosting package supports SSH it should be able to be installed, I haven't looked into the exact details of setting it up, however. :/

SVN, CVS or whatever. As long as others can compile the code it'd be good enough. I'd appreciate the ability to do that for sure. ;)

That doesn't contain much. But why? You don't need Sourceforge to create a source repository.

Sourceforge is now offering SVN repositories on a trial basis in addition to CVS. BerliOS also offers similar service to Sourceforge, including already-freely-useable SVN.

I also just found OpenSVN, which is a free SVN server run by a few students. They have no license requirements of any sort (as long as the content is legal).

Considering that there isn't even supposed to be a ZDoom SourceForge project because it isn't "free enough," I think using SourceForge now would be a bad idea.

The OpenSVN server then seems to fit the bill. There are no license requirements and you can allow anonymous checkouts just like Sourceforge and similar sites.

One last suggestion if you are seriously considering this: Ask for hosting at http://www.icculus.org/. It hosts many game source and related projects, without much regard for license. In fact, many of the projects there are based on source releases with licenses that are incompatable with SourceForge's requirements.

You can look at some of the usage requirements and features of hosting at http://www.icculus.org/sysinfo/usage.html. This would really be the most ideal host if icculus consents.

Randy: If you're still considering it, I'd be more than happy to set you up with something. I'm already providing repositories for Slade and Eternity, so I would have no problem helping out my favorite port. If you're interested shoot me an email.
