How do you harmonize wads/megawads and heavy altering gameplay mods?

Post by joaokol »

Hi people from doom community. I am quite new into doom modding and really dont know much about the scenario because i am exploring it rightnow.

The title of the post is well, my question.

I've played trought Eviternity and really liked it, but then i remembered a gameplay mod that is project brutality, and wanted to try it out.
I know that PB is a gameplay mod, so i need wads to play with it. But since PB is so heavy altering in its core gameplay, i found little wads and megawads that are actually made for the mod, that will not break or be unbalanced if i use mechanics like jumping and ledgegrab, or even the new monsters and behaviour mechanics.
I've noticed that doom maps are majorly made for vanilla gameplay, or if it have some core gameplay change, it will be small or with less agressive mods.

Honestly, my major concern is just ruining the expirience of the wads that i play or breaking it somehow.

How do you filter or harmonize these kind of mods with cummunity wads? Do you like tweak the setting for every wad, just ignore mechanics like jumping and ledgegrab, only download maps from specific mapmakers. Or any of these worries is completelly irrelevant?

No matter what you do, playing any map with any mod it wasn't designed for will be "ruining" the intended experience.
While I would say that you have no need to worry about it, I can understand if you want to honor map makers by playing their maps the intended way.
You could first play the map vanilla so you can play it the way intended by the maker and then playing it again with any mod you wanted as additional experience.
It's not something I do personally, as if I see a map that would compliment a mod, I play them together, even if it's my first time with said map.
Ignoring jumping and the like can also work, but I have seen mods that rely on features like those, so it's not a surefire solution.

I just don't believe there is a strictly intended way to play Doom, just a way you like to play.
For instance I would never touch a slaughter map without any kind of power fantasy mod loaded alongside it. It's just not something I like to do.
Yes, it breaks the map, but I find it far more enjoyable to play.

I tell myself that I need to play it intended way first.
Then after completing it I never load it with gameplay mods because by the time I finish it I have next mappack to play on the horizon.

But there have been couple of comfort wads that I know very well and I mix and match them with whatever.
It also works in reverse: if I know gameplay mod very well or I've made it myself it gets promoted into comfort mod and gets loaded with almost everything.
