The BackDooms - Doom II Single Map Replacement

Post by painedanomaly »

The BackDooms is a single map replacement PK3 for Doom II (Tested using GZDoom g4.12.2). The PK3 contains 3 separate WAD files:

backdoomsMAP33.wad - The map itself. It technically doesn't "replace" any maps, since it is MAP33. However...
backdoomsTEX.wad - The textures and tweaks for the map. Replaces the normal Doom II start with 'Level 0'; MAP33. You can still use the 'changemap' console command to play through normal Doom II, though the textures will be... wonky, per se.
ZDIFF.wad - Difficulty settings tweaks. Just something I decided to add to the PK3 that I made for fun. You can use this WAD with or without the map and textures if you like, and it's seemingly fully compatible with other WADs I have tested it on.

The Backrooms wall texture used came from NovaSkin:

(Googled "backrooms wall texture" and changed the image size to "Icon" and it's the first result)

Also I used https://c.eev.ee/doom-text-generator for the names of the difficulty settings.

This is my first Doom map/mod that I've made, and just my first time posting here in general. I tried making this map sort of feel like a mix of Pac-Man with a hard, and unforgiving maze pit against you.
The map is very simple in concept; You start in a maze with a Super Shotgun in front of you to fight against 26 Revenants to find the door on the other side of the map. There are also spawns for Plasma Rifles around the map as well. However, there are pros and cons to each of these weapons in the map. The Plasma Rifle can pretty much infinitely stun a Revenant so they can't attack, but that's only if there's one in front of you you're constantly firing at. If there are multiple after you in a corridor, the Super Shotgun is more helpful in hitting multiple Revenants and getting the job done quick.

As simple as this concept sounds, playing it on the 'Test Run' difficulty is terrifying to me. Even with both of the weapons given to you, if you get multiple Revenants after you, it's essentially game over.

I played your map all the way to the end and it was fun to play. I like how you hear the monsters but cannot see them so you are wainting for each corner to see one.
Some suggestions would be make the hallways larger and not put that much items. Also secrets rooms and passages would have been a great addition. Except that I enjoyed it !
