[Experimental] Batman teleport effect

Post by wildweasel »

I went slightly viral on Twitter, 2 years ago, when I posted this:

This was an early experiment with A_OverlayRotate/A_OverlayScale commands, from slightly before those features got added to GZDoom. I had long said to people that this would make its way into my next serious mod. ...Then I never actually made a new mod for it to go in.

So here it is for you to either load, or use as you will. Credits for assembly of this go to the regulars on the ZDoom Discord, in particular phantombeta who helped me keep the code reasonably clean and figure out how to make it trigger upon teleportation. And, uh, credits to the creators of the 1960s Batman TV show, for the inspiration.

Download it from my Dropbox here.

This will probably stop working if you're loading any mod that replaces TeleportFog; I also have no idea what it will do if a monster teleports with it as I never tested that. Oh, and the addition of widescreen graphics to GZDoom does mess up one of the zoom-in graphics (the id logo). that's probably simple enough to fix if you want to use it in one of your projects for whatever goddamn reason, I didn't care enough to fix it myself. What you get here is exactly what I created 2 years ago.

I like this mod. I grew up watching the 1960s series with Adam West. I like how you put the sound effect for switching scenes in there! I am curious to see what it looks like with a monster teleport. Would go very well with any batman levels too.

I haven't looked into the mod yet but - concerning universal compatibility, it can be done by setting it up on a RenderOverlay (in an EventHandler) instead.

I have tested this mod. There is no external teleport effect like when monsters teleport into the room. I just still love this mod because it's got the nostalgia from the old Batman series. Makes me want some Batman music to go with it.

Definitely needs to be used in any Batman TC.
