11. I rarely talk about gameplay and technical modifications, since something significant in this vein really rarely comes out (the last message, if I'm not mistaken, is dated 20.11.22 and was dedicated to Voxel Doom). Today there was a reason to remember them again.

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... -082-beta/

A comrade under the nickname @Lemon King set himself an ambitious task - to collect into a single, mutually complementary whole, Doom and Doom II, Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders and Heretic II, Hexen: Beyond Heretic and the add-on Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, Hexen II and the add-on Portal of Praevus. The project was designated by the abbreviation HXDD and is now in beta. Among the main options, we can note:

- a full-fledged ability to play for 11 classes is planned. Doomguy, two versions of Corvus, three classes from the original Hexen and five more from Hexen II.
- the degree of class and hero progression can be customized at your discretion, from classic to more advanced, typical for Hexen II.
- pickup consumables have different effects, depending on the selected character.
- support for custom wads is declared.
- support for cooperative mode is declared.

Subjectively, I found the combination of the original Heretic and the heroes from Hexen II to be the most interesting. This combination is currently being worked on, only 1 class out of 5 is more or less debugged, but even at this stage you can roughly understand the intended vector and prospects.

The installation situation is as follows:

1. You need to put the latest version of GzDoom (https://zdoom.org/downloads) and iwad's, HERETIC.WAD, HEXEN.WAD and HEXDD.WAD in one folder. From the side of Hexen II and its add-ons, you will need pak0.pak, pak1.pak, pak3.pak and an optional pak4.pak (improves models, in particular demonesses, makes some other improvements), which can be taken here - https://sourceforge.net/projects/uhexen2/files/Hexen2 GameData/hexenworld-pakfiles/.

2. You will need to place noesisv4473.zip separately if you are interested in Hexen II support, you can get it here - https://richwhitehouse.com/index.php?co ... project=91.

3. Launch HXDD, select the path to GzDoom and the 7 previously mentioned files. Noesis is connected automatically. On the right, check the box "Enable Hexen II". Click "Build HXDD".

4. Connect the resulting HXDD.ipk3 in the standard way, for example Path=E:\gzdoom-4-12-2-windows\HXDD.ipk3 in [Global.Autoload], which is located in gzdoom_portable.ini. Or by dragging HXDD.ipk3 onto gzdoom.exe, which can also act as a replacement .exe for any game on Steam, such as E:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders\base\dosbox.exe.

180. Doom 2 in Song Only (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... se-update/

One of the trends of recent years has been the creation of collective wads, the levels of which are united by a common theme. One such example is DiSO,where each level had to reflect in its structure and theme the name of a particular track from the original Doom II. The result is 23 works, unevenly divided into available slots, also unevenly varying in scale and quality.

As is usual in such cases, some creations turned out to be truly original - on M1 - "Running From Evil" the doomguy is pursued by a cyberdemon from the very start, and the existing shortage of ammo remains dynamic until the very end, which clearly reflects the title. Others only nominally, such as M7 - "Shawn's Got The Shotgun", reflect / replenish the essence of what they are, in this case, the fact that at the start of the level you can pick up that very shotgun.

The overall verdict is not comforting - the output is a fairly ordinary project, which has a couple of interesting maps in their own way, but globally this megawad is lost, including against the background of other thematic works, and projects that came out in the hot, literally and figuratively, period of both mid-summer 2024 and its first half of the year as a whole. There were more than enough purely new, interesting works that arrived, as well as completed ones, previously started. Here, as with an expensive, but spontaneously bought box of chocolates of an unknown brand - you can get a few tasty ones, but the rest will make you regret the money spent.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, UV difficulty.
* A full walkthrough will take ~ 3,5 hours.

Pros:

+ M17 - "The Healer Stalks (2)".
+ M19 - "Suspence".

Contras:

- M4 - "Between Levels". Some kind of extraordinary, surreal story could have been implemented here, but instead it turned out to be a mess. Some sectors intersect sharply with others, and some can be visited, while others cannot. As a result of such rough design - it was possible to get stuck at the very beginning, and there was no interest in figuring out what was what further, noclip came into play. A similar problem overtook three more maps.

* M24 - "In The Dark (2)". The impression of a generally good work was blurred due to the last segment, where there are no textures. In one of the places, I never found a ladder to climb up.

- M29 - "At Doom's 2 Gate". Repeated and not the most successful use of a similar in spirit concept, where the name is structurally partly the map itself. I could not leave the section with the red key without noclip.

- M30 - "Opening To Hell". The level starts with wandering through strange and narrow corridors, then this segment breaks off and abruptly turns into a well-known analogy about circles, and in the end everything rolls into a fairly standard battle with a famous boss. In my case, everything did not go smoothly again - after pressing three switches, I still did not find how to get close to the enemy generating endless waves of enemies, it is apparently impossible to destroy him from afar. Boring. I finished the epic with a combination of noclip + god.

Secret levels:

M15 -> M31. The passage to the exit is fenced off by a wall. I did not find how to lower it, but if you are clever enough and have a reserve of HP of 100 units, you can perform a rocket jump.
M31 -> M32. Exiting from M32 leads to the end of the game, so it makes sense to leave a separate save at M15 -> M16.

181. Down Under (2023 / 2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... ck-combat/

A 12-level wad set in Australia. The color scheme is dominated by orange and brown tones, which makes it similar to the previously reviewed DBP53: Plutonian Sunrise (2022) and Tangerine Nightmare (2017 / 2018). The similarities don't end there - like the aforementioned wads, this work is full of tough skirmishes in small spaces. The passage of the levels here is quite fleeting, the limit on the size of the maps affects - it will take about 1 hour. You have 5,5 minutes to explore the last level. Using the rocket jump mechanics, you don't have to go through it entirely.
Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, UV difficulty.

32. Otherwordly Ossuary (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... ary-mbf21/

In some ways continuing the orange-brown style, with an adjustment for shifts from industrial to gothic themes, this single map is notable, in addition to architectural and stylistic solutions, for some gameplay features - the damage from the plasma gun has been increased, as has the speed of shots, the health of lost souls has been cut to 50 units, elementals explode when destroyed (hello Doom 64).

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, UV difficulty.
* Complete playthrough will take ~ 7 minutes.

33. 31, And Then Some (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... ompatible/

What can you give yourself for your 31st birthday? The answer is a map for Doom. Guided by this postulate the author released this small map that can be completed in less than 5 minutes. Despite the volume and the low number of opponents, 31, the concept of a "combat puzzle" is skillfully played out here.
Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, UV difficulty.

182. Happy Birthday Dashie! (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... wad-mbf21/

Continuing with the theme of holidays. What can you give a young lady with the nickname dashiefrickintyan for her birthday? The answer is a short wad, of four maps in purple style, with tough dynamics based on the "UV Lite" principle, which in its way refers to Stardate 20X6 (2013). In addition, it remains to add a good soundtrack and speed up the machine gun - a gift that takes place within 10 minutes is ready.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, UV complexity.

34. Orca (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... n-idgames/

Doomguy finds himself in a small cave, covered with vegetation and filled with monsters. At the end of the level, you can find a lonely growing flower. Depending on whether you manage to get the yellow key and deal with the enemies guarding it, the ending of this short, passable in about 10 minutes, but its own remarkable map will depend.

183. El Viaje de Diciembre (2023).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... diciembre/

Literal translation - December journey. The action in this small, but atmospheric wad, of 6 levels takes place in an abstract, remote village, somewhere in the mountains of Chile. In addition to the pronounced aesthetic component, one can note - the well-chosen soundtrack and modified sounds of the main arsenal, which draws parallels with old westerns.
Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, UV difficulty.
* A full walkthrough will take ~ 1 hour.

184. Parallel Doomensions (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... -released/

A 28-level wad (2 secret), which is a mix of the original Doom and Quake I, approximately in a 30 to 60 ratio, diluted by 10% also with horror elements, typical of Doom 64. The style and aesthetics are characteristically brown. The standard roster of monsters was diluted with a number of new varieties, in particular, here you can meet a rare thing for Doom wads, in the person of a formidable, but dangerous only at close range, furry shambler. The maps vary in structure and scale, but in general, relatively moderate sizes prevail. All technical elements typical of Quake I, such as the ability to swim underwater, elevators, portals, are included. The narrative, although generally nominal in its essence, is divided into three episodes, differing both structurally and stylistically. Each subsequent level is not similar to the previous one.

The dynamics of local skirmishes are somewhat unusual - the usual pace is sometimes supplemented by the slowness of certain types of monsters. Otherwise, there is nothing special to say about this objectively high-quality work, except that this is how the original Quake could have looked if it had operated with sprites instead of 3D models, and at the moment, there is probably nothing "more canonical" that successfully combines elements of the aforementioned titles.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, Hard (UV) difficulty.
* Complete completion will take ~ 7,5 hours.
* The ending of M8 with two shamblers is a peculiar reference to the ending of the first episode of the original Doom.

Secret levels.

M15 -> M31. To the left of the main exit.
M31 -> M32.

12. Samsara Reincarnation is built on a formula similar to the previously reviewed HXDD, but with a significant difference - if the mentioned one focused mainly on the combination of Heretic and Hexen, then this mod brings with it the support of a huge scattering of heroes from the galaxy of classic shooters, their arsenal, as well as opponents and a soundtrack. The project itself, with the subtitle "Reincarnation", is the development of a concept abandoned in the past.

The titles covered range from Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition (1996) and its add-ons, Corridor 7: Alien Invasion (1994) and Powerslave (1996) to creations like Eradicator (1996), support for the developments of which I have never seen anywhere else, and to this day there is not a single source port to it.

viewtopic.php?t=74652
There is no point in listing all the numerous options, so I will only focus on the basic points:

A. The choice of heroes is really extensive.
B. Both classic titles from Id / Raven and custom wads are supported. C. If classic opponents have become boring, then it is enough to hang another file at the end of the download and the roster of such will change / expand significantly.

Let's move on to the settings.

https://www.old-games.ru/forum/attachme ... pg.317557/

1. At first, you are asked to choose a hero and difficulty. Depending on the title, one or more characters of the same may be supported.

https://www.old-games.ru/forum/attachme ... pg.317558/

2. To switch to the third person view, you can use the console, ~, and the "chase" command, or by specifying the key in Options -> Customize controls -> Other -> Chasecam.

https://www.old-games.ru/forum/attachme ... pg.317559/

3. The character's coloring can be customized in "Player Setup" if you upload an additional .pk3, which can be taken here. So, for example, if you are interested in painting Elena's costume from Eradicator in purple, then you will need to select the color values 96, 48, 96. If you prefer classic red, then 128, 32, 32.

4. In general, the connection sequence for me was as follows:

[Global.Autoload]
path=E:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders\base\Samsara-Reincarnation_v2.0.pk3
path=E:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders\base\Samsara-Reincarnation_ViewModels_v2.0.pk3
path=E:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders\base\samsara-reincarnation-iwadcompat-2.0-zd.pk3
path=E:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders\base\Samsara-Reincarnation_OST_v2.0.pk3

5. The soundtrack can be customized to your taste, I settled on tracks from Hexen II (1997), although someone might like the technogenic tracks from Deus Ex (2000).

Sansara Clientside Options -> Hero Soundtrack -> Game Override -> Hero Game Music Overrides -> select game -> ON. The key for selecting the next track can be specified in "Customize Controls".

A small map for Heretic, the first attempt by a comrade hiding under the nickname Amaruψ. At the end, a battle with three Malotaurs awaits in a small arena.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, difficulty 4/5.

35. Nostalgic Entropy: Neo Retro (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... tro-mbf21/

I have already talked about two works by a comrade with the nickname AshtralFiend, "Duality" and "Otherworldly Ossuary", today I would like to dwell on four more - three single maps and one wad. They all have several common elements - as a rule, a relatively moderate number of enemies, tough skirmishes with them in small locations, high detail of the maps, similar style.

The first and, at the moment, the last work of the author was a nostalgic map about the future that did not come - retrowave in the spirit of the 80s with all the characteristic elements. In addition to the abundance of custom textures, some other changes can be noted: the health of cyberdemons and masterminds was reduced to 2500, lost souls to 50, elementals explode when destroyed.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, difficulty UV.
* Complete playthrough will take ~ 40 minutes.
* Sound is missing here and in the next 3 videos on the topic due to audio issues that were noticed late.

---

36. Venom Vendetta (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... mbf21-map/

As the name suggests, one of the key enemy types on this compact and tech-based map will be spiders and one mastermind in particular.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, difficulty UV.
* Full playthrough will take ~ 10-15 minutes.

---

37. Habitat Complex (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... n-idgames/

A larger and more complex technogenic map, diluted with various spiritual inclusions and in places cunningly hidden secrets.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, difficulty UV.
* Full playthrough will take ~ 30-40 minutes.

---

185. Head Trauma (2023).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... n-idgames/

Wad of 5+1 levels (5 main and credits) with floating difficulty, partly inspired by the once reviewed "Going Down" (2014) and the classic duology The Plutonia Experiment / Final DOOM: TNT - Evilution.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, UV difficulty.
* Full completion will take ~ 2 hours.

38. TNTPhobia (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... n-idgames/

Maps and wads that play on the combination of horror and surrealism have become a separate category, presenting Doom in a completely different key from the classic shooter. I periodically talk about various works of this kind, and a number of some of the most notable ones were once singled out as a separate material (RU). Less often, but with a similar bias, there is an addition of two more components - a puzzle and a "walking simulator".

TNTPhobia is a bright and rather rare in terms of successful implementation representative of a combination of four elements. The dream theme has also been exploited more than once before, and this map was no exception. The introductory plot is simple in its context, but, as usual, this does not play a significant role - the content is much more important. Exploring a strange world, on the one hand similar to the familiar childhood surroundings of "TNT - Evilution" (1996), and on the other hand representing something completely different, you can either simply purposefully move towards the finale, or solve puzzles of varying degrees of intricacy along the way, finding Doomguys hidden here and there. Finding all of them, which is a rather non-trivial task, will allow you to gain access to an alternative ending. However, nothing will also prevent you from using noclip and bypassing the door requiring 6 keys, if you are not in the mood for such an approach, but are interested in seeing another epilogue.

Settings and features:

* GzDoom 4.12.2, difficulty UV.
* A full playthrough will take ~ 1 hour, not including finding all the doomguys.

39. Habitat Alpha (2024).

https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/1 ... ydoom-wad/

If I haven't lost my calculations, the total number of available / preserved thematic maps with "console spirit", PSX and 64 separately, currently amounts to 63 pieces, and the release of one or another new work is a rather rare event. Rare especially when it comes to the source-port of PsyDoom, directly exploiting the features of Final Doom for PSX - such works, and all of them are single maps, currently number 8 pieces.

There is nothing special to say about the map itself - simple in structure and specificity, but with an atmosphere typical for such projects. The name, apparently, refers to M22 - "Habitat" from TNT: Evilution (1996).

Settings and features:

* PsyDoom 1.1.1, UV difficulty.
* Complete playthrough will take ~ 20 minutes.

https://store.steampowered.com/news/app ... 3144772303

Today, the latest reissue of the classic Doom dilogy and its main additions was released. In addition to the fact of moving to the KEX Engine (Quake I and Doom 64 also run on it now) instead of Unity, an updated soundtrack, achievement support, co-op for up to 16 people and a number of other features, including many technical ones, two aspects can be noted:

1. A completely new episode was added, created by the joint efforts of id Software, Nightdive Studios and MachineGames - "Legacy of Rust". I plan to review it soon.

2. The list of custom wads that have moved into the category near official ones has been expanded with three more wads since the last iteration - The Troopers' Playground (1996), a note on which is also planned for the coming days, Scientist 2023 (2023), which there are no plans to review, since it is more of a TC, as well as Tetanus (2023), Cacowards 2023, which subjectively did not seem interesting to me, so it will also be skipped. It is worth noting separately that the last two are available in the Unity version, but not the updated KEX version.

A characteristic detail - in the settings, it was not possible to find the option to enable mouselook anywhere. Everything is like in the old, "tractor" times.
