That is odd. Here's what I see with OpenGL, 4.11, "Classic," and "More Light" - otherwise default settings

Hexen test

Your image is definitely darker; I note the floor is black. I don't seem to be able to reproduce what you are seeing. :?

Here's me with the Flashlight++ mod added, default settings: https://imgur.com/a/lW3J6lf

As you can see, the flashlight barely does anything in the first photo, and does literally nothing in the third one (imgur reordered my images from the order I uploaded). The second image is me disabling all mods and just running GZDoom with Hexen and no additional changes, just to confirm that the textures actually display on my system without mods. I had a little panic that like... maybe my WAD was corrupted or something (even though I'd seen it work with ReLite, worth double-checking).

Is there anything I can do to help track this down or something else I can test?

do you have dynamic lights enabled? etc.

seems odd that it'd be so dark, though there is also no lights.

That is odd that the flashlight does nothing, since this is a dynamic light. It's peculiar that your middle image without the mod looks OK, too, suggesting GZDoom is OK. I'm leaning toward something amiss with GZDoom dynamic lights as Dan suggests because of the flashlight issue (the flashlight is a dynamic spotlight). :? Relighting does darken the room somewhat - there's really no light in the space - but it appears to me not to the extent that you are seeing. I'll think on it. :)

Perhaps, it's a monitor or video card difference. It's difficult to standardize between rigs (I think). I don't, however, know how significant those differences are. Do you see similar phenomena with other GZDoom games running Relighting?

Here's some Doom screenshots from E1M1 and E1M2 with Relighting and a couple of dark areas with Flashlight++.

The flashlight mostly works normally in Hexen, it's mostly *just* that space that's weird, like the surfaces are so dark they've gone out the other side and even with the added brightness *most* of them don't light up. The last couple images are with the flashlight having its intensity turned up to maximum, and you can see *some* of the surfaces get a *tiny* bit of light.

Meanwhile the door is pretty normally lit, and then a few of those surfaces appear to be brightly lit independently of my flashlight.

Is there any possible something could be projecting darkness instead of light? Some light source down there coming across as inverted somehow?

I have been getting some dark rooms in my recent obsidian maps, but those rooms have no lights, no windows and no adjacent rooms with lights.

so i think that's normal, or at least seems normal to me

Have you tried any other flashlight mods with Hexen?

No, I haven't. Just to make sure it's clear, the bug/issue happens when there are literally no other mods loaded, not even Flashlight++, just Relighting itself.

A small update: I noticed while testing things that if I turn on "Light Shadowmaps" the room looks more normal *until* the doors open. As they open it gets darker in there. So it really looks like there's somehow a dynamic light that's casting darkness rather than brightness? Is that even possible?

Interesting. You can try turning off "Subtractive Lighting" under "How Light Interacts with Map" - these are applied sparingly to some outside textures. That's the only lighting that would cast darkness I can think of.

Turning off subtractive lighting seems to make the room look much more normal.

So it looks like there's a too-strong subtractive light there. Are there different versions of the Hexen IWADs or something that might affect why it's happening for me but not you?

i might have to try this subtractive lighting thing next time i push along my 999map wad.
unlit areas get really dark in seemingly random rooms.

in other news, the shading bug with the shadow flag or whatever seems to fix itself sometimes??? not sure what that means exactly.

Should this be used alongside GZDoom's lights.pk3 and brightmaps.pk3?

That wouldn't hurt. The mod reads the GLDEFS text file in lights for configuration.
