Duke Nukem Forever 2001

Post by Ihavequestions »

So, the leaked 2001 version of Duke Nukem Forever... Has anyone else here tried it out?

I've tried it out, and despite all the bugs and glitches, I've felt immediately at home. This game clearly has potential. It's the Duke as we know and love him, and now he can even throw TVs at people.

What is your opinion?

And, by the way, does any of you know of any bug-fixing and modernization projects coming up? Got any links to relevant sites and forums?

I don't really have enough interest in Duke to download and attempt to play a leaked development build from 21 years ago.

As for relevant forums, there's pretty much only one active Duke forum nowadays: https://forums.duke4.net/

Not really, just seen some footage of it.

It was supposedly meant to release in June or July, but released a day after that lol. Now that timeframe is for a second release which is said to be less buggy and more modernized. I'm glad it did finally release for the people who wanted it ever since it was first shown way back in 2001, but I wouldn't keep my hopes up for potential projects for it, let alone finishing and fixing it, as we have seen with other leaks. This is probably just going to be the "anon-hl2", Duke Edition, and nothing more.

It also turned out it was not as complete as anticipated either, it's reportedly not even remotely close to being "90% complete", assuming such a thing even exists in the first place, which I honestly doubt.

90% is quite possible. The game is quite buggy, but it does have a lot of content, although everything still seems pretty unpolished.

Anyway, the only real issue I've had with it is being unable to load savegames. It just won't do it. So I have to pistol-start each map, play in god mode, occasionally use the fly cheat, and take care not to move certain objects (plants and cardboard boxes, among others) that will make the game crash.

The most we'll probably see out of this are grey area weapon conversions to finished games. Finishing the prototype is a lost cause - any attempt will end up as "we have DNF 2011 at home" and repeat history, along with lawsuits, takedowns and whatnot...

this is entirely wishful thinking and absolutely not going to happen, but the fact that unreal engine 1 source was leaked alongside this makes me reallly wish there was an officially sanctioned release of the source.

We may see some fixed maps, and more content overall in the future, but otherwise actually completing this version of the game is extremely doubtful, and there is also no precedent for it, either, again using HL2 as an example here.

Nobody ever finished or fixed that leak either, the farthest things got was a huge patch with fixed maps, but they are derivative works since the originals relied on models, textures, or features that got removed from the game since. And that, some 17yrs later after the fact no less. The outcome to this is probably going to be similar.

Shame it could never be officially approved, but I guess it's better than nothing at all. At least the fans who wanted it can sleep now (or spin in their graves, whatever floats their boat).

There's some who honestly believe it can happen because "modders seem to get away with everything", ignoring the whole foxing thing, and going with gta car mods and player models as a precedent... LOL good luck getting JSJ

Also completing prototypes with cruft can be potential misinformation down the line. When the Sam Alpha was leaked, that leak was modified to have music from the later sam games and the newer werebull, and many believed it.

Pretty much. I'd like to dream of that too, but the chances are close to being zero.

And besides, speaking of JSJ, he simply isn't the same who voiced Duke in 3D, DNF2001, or the tons of NPCs in Opposing Force, if his performance in WT is anything to go by. His voice changed too much over the years.
