-=What's this now?=-
This is my very own, self indulgent, companion mod that contains many things I love, like cat-people, skeletons, mushrooms and clowns. There were a few gameplay mods like this coming out a while back, and I'm very late to the trend, but it's not like I've ever been trendy and with it anyway *shrug*
This companion mod is made in the style of Gholazon X (or I guess you could say it's similar to the Brutal Doom marine helpers too), where instead of having a more intelligent and sturdy companion that follows you(just one or two usually), you will instead find many simple helpers through the map and free them in some way before they can start helping. I find that this style of companion mod is more fun and balanced, as they are not just an unkillable, autonomous, extra sources of damage, but more like buddies you have to look after to some extent, the same way they look after you.
-=I'm a huge nerd and I care about Lore. What's the dealio here?=-
The cat world, a dimension parallel to our own which is an utopia inhabited by cat people, becomes aware of the ongoing demonic invasion. Fearing that they could potentially come for their dimension after being done with ours, they decide to lend the humans a hand, sending in their highly skilled fighters to aid in the front lines. Making use of their superior predatory abilities, as well as small arms and magic, the Cat Associates are sure to turn the tide of combat in your favor!
-=INSTRUCTIONS=-
Spoiler:
-=BASICS=-
1.Cat Statues will spawn alongside powerups. These are beacons, which serve as a conduit between our world and the cat dimension. Destroy them, and a portal will be open, allowing your new cat associates to pass through.
2. Normal statues will have an icon above them indicating which class of cat they spawn. These are currently: Brawler, Mage, Ranger and Summoner.
3.Golden statues will show no indication of which class they spawn. Cats spawned from Golden statues are 'special cats', each having a different gimmick, and generally being stronger than regular units.
4.You have been given a cat communicator (a phone really), which will allow you to summon your cat associates to your current position. After using the cat communicator, there will be a 10 second cooldown before you can use it again.
5.You will come across certain supplies left behind by your cat associates. Mushrooms can be placed down and made to act as turrets. Pumpkins will heal them completely and make them invulnerable for 30 seconds. Totems will spawn 3 backup cats who fight through more conventional means. Good if you haven't found any allies yet!
6.Should a cat associate become incapacitated, you will be notified of their status, and they will be whisked away for medical attention, removing them from the battlefield.
7.Cat associates will not follow you into the next map, for they must stay behind and hold the ground already cleared. Fret not, for there are sure to be more cat beacons wherever you go!
-=CLASSES=-
The regular units come equipped only with a simple SMG, but they can also make use of class-specific abilities.
Brawler(red): The Brawler is a close-combat powerhouse. They attack with sharp axes that bounce along the ground and seek enemies, and once close enough they will lunge in with their quad-mace, that can shred through enemies in seconds. Brawlers have the most health out of all basic units.
Ranger(yellow): Though advanced firearms are generally unheard of in the cat dimension, the Ranger seems to be an exception. Using glyph magic, they can turn their underwhelming SMGs into powerful hyper-blasters, or into mighty shotguns if the situation calls for it. Ranger has an average health pool.
Mage(cyan): Mages are masters of ancient glyph magic, but choose to employ it in it's most raw form, by manipulating the elements around them directly in order to cast devastating spells! The mage can set groups of enemies on fire, freeze them, cast explosives bolts of lightning, and even heal you and their fellow cat associates! Mage's health is bellow average.
Summoner(purple): These cats have dedicated their glyph studies to the art of communicating with and raising the dead. In combat they will summon the spirits of fallen soldiers that still linger the battle fields letting them have a rematch against their malefactors, or alternatively they can conjure ghastly skulls to attack their enemies directly. Summoners have the lowest health out of all the units.
Backup(brown): The backup team are simple cats who have no special abilities, fighting using only their SMGs and small explosives. They can be called into battle with totems, and each totem will spawn 3 backup cats. While they are not as flashy as the specialized classes, they make up for it not only in numbers, but convenience! They have a small health pool.
-=SPECIAL CLASSES=-
Flopstar: An autonomous sentry powered by glyph magic. They are fast, sturdy, and have a bad temper. They will charge their foes relentlessly for massive damage. They are also prolific rappers when not on hunts.
Goddess Cacao: The one and only goddess of the cat world. Though this is not her true form, but merely an avatar of her, with a fraction of her greatness. She can fire a barrage of homing hearts which don't do that much damage, but can convert weakened enemies, turning them into allies. She can also revive fallen monsters and take them under her command. Cacao would like to state for the record that she is not related to, based on, or associated with any Nintendo character, living or dead, and that any similarities are a mere coincidence.
Clown: The cats favorite form of entertainment! They love to slap these little guys around, and revel in their slapstick performances. Years of this have rendered the clowns 100% impervious to all damage! Of course, they possess no combat prowess whatsoever, but they will prove to be a very useful distraction against the hordes of hellspawn, who will attack them in a vain attempt to make them stop honking and hitting them with juggler balls.
-=ITEMS=-
Mushroom Minion: A giant mushroom enhanced by glyph magic, giving it the ability to serve as a turret. They aren't very sturdy, but if placed in numbers, and on strategic positions, they can offer precious cover for the regular troops. You can carry 4 mushrooms.
Magic Pumpkin: Will fully heal, and bestow your cat associates with a defensive buff for a short time, making them invincible. You can only carry one, so make sure to round all your allies up before using it, or save these for boss battles!
Totem: Much like the beacon statues, the totem can serve as a conduit between worlds. Place one down, and it will summon backup troops to supplement your ranks if you're in a pinch. You can carry two totems.
Definitely getting this one downloaded, looks well made!
Currently playing with another ally character mod and I appreciate how this one doesn't make them completely invulnerable.
Small update:
-Fixed the inventory icons so they don't float above the inventory box
-Removed the +AVOIDMELEE flag from regular cats since it was making them ineffective in enclosed spaces. Instead they have a simple melee claw attack now.
-Reworked the phone so it never actually leaves your inventory upon use, and you can actually see it charging back up in real time. It's less annoying to use now, since you don't have to keep re-selecting it
I noticed a moment ago while playing this neat mod when this update just came out, the backup cats from the totem can actually hurt and kill you when their grenade ricochets near you.
