in game are three autumn leaves textures. Two I am done before. Now are finished all three.
On original texture is not see something useful for redone and upscaling look extremely bad and leaves are too big
This my new texture is "freestyle" with mine imagination.

Have you tried to do any of the facelifting in Inkscape or Illustrator? Some of the fine lines you are looking for can be done there. And, as I find myself constantly find myself reminding other ID heads who do art, they used real objects, then edited them often. So don't be afraid to take something real and "gamify it".

for everything I use gimp, plugins and manual enhancing. Sometimes I use true object from fotos and editing them for game but not often. I am not fan for big changes from original art but some changes are sometimes useful. Those leaves are combined more fotos and cut some pieces, using brush and eraser and after editing it how texture. I know this not look much "gaming" but i think original leaves in game are from real photos in Hexen but resolution is too smal and do not see it much.

I'm trying a new upscaling method on textures
This is combination bicubic , xbr and esrgan. Rounded parts are fixed manually.

and this is final version with half resolution( 256x256) and final dithering
